1980 Chrome Schwinn Voyageur 11.8

Hello everybody, I am new to the C&V forum, and have a few questions for you. I have recently received a 1980 chrome Schwinn Voyageur 11.8, however, I really have no use for this bike. I am not interested in riding it and am not an avid collector. I would like to sell it, but am unsure of the value or where I should sell it, to maximize the profit I get. The bike has all original components and is in very good condition. I have a few pictures posted, click the link below...

Thanks for any help!
-Dave

In my area, a ready to ride super clean painted version is worth about $250 (I sold one earlier this year). Add a healthy premium for chrome. Painless way to sell it is Craigs List, will probably not maximize the price, but should do OK. How close are you to Chicago? This is the wrong time of year to sell a bike. You might do slightly better selling on ebay, but do you have positive feedback? Are you ready to carefully package and ship a bike??? ebay is a crapshoot, sometimes you get top dollar, other times you don't.

However you sell the bike: Craigs List or ebay; you will need to create an awesome ad with some great photos. Otherwise, you will not get maximum price on either venue. The ads on C/L with the small junky pictures they use will not maximize your profit. You can search your local C/L or Chicago's and you will probably see some good ads to pattern yours after.

Need to take pictures with the sun behind you as it will show off the bike the best.

Thanks for the advice, I did try craigslist, but it seems that most people try to lowball a lot. I am not willing to sell the bike for 100 dollars obviously. I have no experience with buying or selling on ebay. How much extra would you add for chrome? You said the painted version is worth $250, do you think 300 is reasonable? You are right about the pictures, finding spare time, with light, and no snow on the cement is difficult right now. Thanks for the help!

I sell books on Ebay and bikes on Craiglist. Why? Ebay fees and shipping kills the value. This looks like a really nice bike, so start at $300 and be patient. Rough time of year to sell. Everyone wants 50 per cent off in winter. Better to wait till spring to get the maximum value

I may just wait until spring, unless I get a buyer on a forum. I am in no hurry to get it out the door, it has been ridden about 50 miles in the past 10 years, and has been in the basement the rest of the time. You are right about the shipping and fees!

3373jones- What am I going to do with it? If I am going out for a ride, I would choose to ride my modern road bike.

There is a young guy on my street that commutes on one and I only see him when he rides. If I am riding and see him I catch him to look at his bike.
I live where it's warm and it seems used bike prices are down a bit. +1 on putting it in hibernation until the spring thaw. Or send it to me because it's my size and it's pretty.

This silly format vaporized my paragraph.. anyway,... start at 300 and expect (read aim) for much , much more. As far as selling it HERE..... uh, uh... yeah.. OK. DO consider e-bay, less drama I'd say.
along with a higher price.

Just ignore the low ballers on Craigs List. They are out there, but that really does not matter. I just delete those emails and do not respond. Marketed properly with a great ad and pictures, I think you should get $300 or maybe even $350 for it. There are good customers out there on Craigs List for this bike. And to me, you are not quite in the price range where ebay starts making sense.

Oh, and bad news, but there are flakes on ebay too.

As far as trying Craigs List, be prepared to take you ad down and repost multiple times. I wait a week or so between reposts. You never know when a buyer for your bike is going to be surfing C/L. Hence, the reposts.

This is a chrome bike in a great shape and will bring you $300 eventually. You have the following things against you right now:

a. for someone who just wants "a good bike", it is an older bike competing with 200x bikes with brifters at this price point b. for someone who wants a vintage steel bike at this price point is competing with lesser condition but better framed bikes and with better names, like Bianchi. c. It is not a bike riding season for most of the country...

You really need to get the right person to find this bike. How would you do that?

a. stress the condition and desirability of the bike with lots of pictures. It is holiday time and bikes are bought for presents right about now. But you have a small window.
b. in your flickr page, make sure that you right on the description of each photo that the bike is currently for sale for $xxx and post photos appropriate in flickr groups that deal with vitage bikes (you'd be surprised) but don't overdo it, be causal about it and do not make it look like an ad
c. patience and persistence. Post it on CL but make sure that the ad stays on the top page, by deleting the old ad and reposting a new one when the old ad moves in the second page
d. you are already doing it, by posting this post

Good luck!

I sold one about 2 years ago for somewhere in the 200-250 range. I would say yours is in better shape than mine was, but not by a lot. I would hold out for $250 minimum.

Thanks for the advice guys! I never had thought of subtly advertising in flickr groups, but that is a good idea. I am currently asking $300 + shipping, but would probably accept no less than $250 + shipping, as you guys point out, it will take a while to find the right buyer. I am not in a big hurry to sell it, but it is just taking up space right now.
