New Cruiser Project

Hi all:

I'm a relative noob at putting wrenches to bikes, but over the last few years I've been able to learn a few things and not mess things up too terribly.
Found this Huffy Classic Beach Edition for free, so this is now my spring time project.
It's a 1x6, everything seems to be there and relatively intact.
The grip shifter is toast, grips are worthless, a fender screws for is missing, a fender stay is a little bent, brake calipers and levers all need some TLC.
The rest seems mostly cosmetic.
The plan is to replace the few parts needed, clean, lube, adjust, etc. and have a new bike for, well - just because.

So all in all, a pretty reasonable pick up for a 10 minute detour while out doing other errands.

Any info about age, things to look out for, etc. greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It didn't take me long to get this project done, here's a recap and some photos:

Before
Bike seemed complete, and really just in need of some TLC and a few fixes.
Grip shifter was toast.
Caliper brakes were complete but needed some help (my first set of caliper brakes - so good learning)
One missing fender screw.
Everything else seemed to be intact, but just grimy/stiff.

During
I took it down to the bare frame & rear derailleur (didn't seem to need to be removed - and I didn't want to expand too far outside the comfort zone) & cleaned all the parts/surfaces.
Greased bearings in the headset, axles, and bottom bracket (my first BB work).
Cleaned up all the chrome as best I could with aluminum foil.
Installed New inner tubes, new brake pads, replaced shifter
Front caliper brake spring was misshapen so it wouldn't engage the studs - I reshaped it for now.

Future
It's been out for a cruise a couple of times, and the brakes work but I think I may need to go look for springs or replacements at my local recyclery.
All in all, lots of learning, had a great time and got a fun bike for about $30 in parts.

More pix coming in follow up posts.

Nice job; you're cruising in style now. Tektro makes a caliper brake for about $20 that might be a slight improvement. The long flexible arms are a deterrent to power.

Thanks for the tip on some new brakes.
I think any replacements won’t need to be too robust as this will be for casual in-style cruising.
