Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's OK to admit you just don't get it.

Yet.

You will.

Stop thinking of Buc-ee's as a gas station, and start thinking of it as a diversified rest stop with bathrooms that are always clean. The two principal owners are stacking it big time.

Yep, like Kum n Go, QT, and some of the newer Maverik stations. 20 kinds of slushees, a dozen different crappy coffee pumps, etc.

There are not Buc'ees sufficient to meet demand. Try to keep up.

As Mojo alluded to, it's not just "a gas station". It's:

1) a gas station (with zero wait for pumps in super bright lights and covered)
2) sparkling-clean bathrooms with dozens and dozens of facilities (no waiting on a road trip for someone to walk out of leaving a Superfund site)
3) a convenience store with everything you discovered what you suddenly remembered you forgot for your trip
4) a restaurant with hot food and even things AG and I can fit into our restricted diets ready-to-go
5) an oasis on a road trip
6) a pillar of the community, employing at $15/hr in the middle of nowhere in Texas with insurance and vacation

Seriously, it humiliates every other place you've ever stopped. Sometimes it's ok to admit you just don't get it.

Kind of hard to do when there's like an acre of gas pumps in front of it. There's got to be like four times as many gas pumps there as anywhere else in the area.

Ha ha no.

Admittedly, I've never tried their coffee. But no, it's not like those others. At all.

The only thing that approaches Buc'ees is the nicest Love's. And y'all might remember how much time I've spent driving across the country.

I'm willing to concede it's the awesomest not-gas station ever. That still doesn't justify all the pumps.

As Mojo31 pointed out, they barely make any money from the gas. Yet they're taking up all that space + maintenance costs for unneeded pumps.

See, I do get it!

Don't forget it's safe. It's one of the few places between DFW and Austin where I feel comfortable with my girls stopping while going back and fourth.

So the two Texans Texan and displaced New Yorker who have experience with Buc'ees say it's amazing. It's successful enough that it's expanding into your state. Buuuuuut you (who has never been to one) know better than the rest of us?

Gas is a "loss leader." Ever hear of that term? That 1% profit on gas gets a ton of people in the store buying stuff that has 100% and 200% profit margins. And, those people stop in droves.

If you've ever driven with a female, you know they will have you drive all over creation in search of a clean toilet. Well, Buc-ee's is the place.

The guys know what they are doing. They are making serious bank.

Fixed for you.

My daughter and her fiance (he's had never been to a Buc-ee's before this) stopped for gas and a break once. He went in to get some snacks for the drive while she filled up her car. He stayed in there for an hour wandering and buying junk before she called him back to the car. The places are traps.

New next door neighbors are moving in. Includes a young child/baby and two much older kids. Maybe late teens and/or early 20s. The boy rides. Saw his new looking Trek road bike. He looks like a serious cyclist. They also have a cute pooch named Nina. Hope she’s not happy. They came from Boston.

All I said that is the one they're building in Crossville has too many gas pumps. Not sure why you "Texans" are taking it personally. SMH.

The large number of pumps is part of Buc'ees. It's not that we're taking it personally; we're telling you that your position of knowing better than they do what they need is uninformed and incorrect. It would not be a proper Buc'ees with six pumps outside or whatever you find adequate, and that is part and parcel of their success. If they built one, with attendant acre of pumps, in NE NM or southern CO it would immediately anchor my driving plans.

It's not too many gas pumps; it's more gas pumps than you're used to. You're going to be shocked when you walk into the restrooms the first time too and probably say it has too many facilities.

Nothing personal on this end as I have nothing to do with the company. I'm just surprised that you would pass judgment without any apparent understanding of the business model.
