It was a bit painful, but I adapted. It wasn't a huge cut, but it was deep enough to need a few stiches. he doctor at the Cut Bank, MT, hospital was wearing cowboy boos and a hat and leather belt with a big buckle.

Somewhere at home I have a photo of a group member taking out the stiches a week or so later. I still have a little scar.

Would have been tough to take a selfie with the Nikon 6006 while riding. Taking one with the Mamiya 645 would have been impossible.

Far as I know, there were no cell phone cameras back in '99. If there were, I certainly didn't have one. Didn't even have a phone. I was head to toe legit.

Think it's both in this case.

Surely, somewhere must offer a remedial trolling course. Maybe we could do a gofundme for him.

I would love to find an organized ride around here that I could participate in for just an entry fee. Mostly, we have charity rides with very high minimums. I don't have any cycling buddies because everyone I know thinks I'm crazy. They can't understand why I would ride a bike when I do own a car. Grownups drive cars -- apparently. Then those same people who think I'm crazy for riding a bike tell me I look great. So trim and fit. How do they think I got that way?

IMO: They know why, & they are probably naturally defiant when it comes to others enjoyment that doesn't match theres.

I get a lot of people saying it makes them too nervous and they don't understand why I'm not bothered by the possibility of getting hit.

I'm sure it's a common "worry" for those of us that ride bicycles.

People are so amazing and yet confounding. A common refrain I hear from non-cyclists when they see me on a bike is either, I used to ride a bike OR I really need to get back to cycling. The other is what you commented on is, How do you stay so skinny/fit? Which masks their jealousy/resentment that you can do it but they don’t have the drive and initiative to do it. If you haven’t already got a bunch of that, you will unless you hang out with like-minded athletic types who understand and have gotten it themselves.

Driving doesn’t make one an adult. Dedication to staying fit, healthy and making the right life decisions does. You just keep what you are doing and know you are sooo right.

But not to the degree that it deters us from riding. That's the part they can't relate to.

I'd have to wonder how you're talking to people if you're perceiving so much "jealousy/resentment" in your conversations with them.

I'd probably get annoyed talking to someone who stated or implied that one isn't an adult unless they're dedicated to staying fit, and I'm pretty damn fit myself.

I dont feel it's a lack of knowledge (in general) to relate, just a choice to not accept our different approach to enjoying other activities.

Try spinning it the other way with something they are involved with that you are not, & you'll find that they are flustered to not understand how you can't grasp there set lifestyle.

My sense is the people I'm talking to honestly are too stressed out by being in such close proximity with moving cars, trucks and buses. I don't think our differing reactions to types of stressors is entirely a matter of choice. I can't relate to being able to listen to boy bands without getting really irritated, I don't recall making that choice.

the speed of the passing vehicles do not bother me. It's often the yokel operating the vehicle that births problems (can out the window, yelling out profanities, high beams on)

In central Michigan, those kinds of rides are thankfully few and far between, and I totally ignore their existence. If charities want to raise money, they should ask for donations. Once they host a bike ride, they are offering a commercial product that competes with other existing offerings. It's like they're opening a McDonalds and only selling Happy Meals for a $50 minimum.

Factor in riding surface conditions for a road bicycle with tires no wider than 28 to a 700c, & you'd be lucky to find a route that is good enough that supports double digit mileage.
If I wanted to go somewhere less than ten miles, I'll just walk it.

No, they're not offering a commercial product. They're asking for donations to a charity, and they're offering an organized ride for the people that donate. People that complain that you don't get enough "product" for the amount of the donation don't seem to understand what the word "charity" means.

Yeah, kind of. Presumably, they're offering the ride to get the donations of people who otherwise wouldn't contribute, so it is a "product" being offered to induce a payment that otherwise wouldn't get made. But yeah, I agree with you complaining about this because it's not the best "bang for the buck" out there is rather silly and a bit obnoxious. If it's effective at raising money and people are having a good enough time that it causes them to contribute when they otherwise wouldn't, then participate or don't.

I kind of think that the complaints about how many charity rides there are fall into the "nobody goes there, it's too crowded" variety. It's obviously a successful way to raise charitable money or people wouldn't keep organizing them.
