What is this piece?

I am replacing shift cables on my mountain bike using Shimano Optislick cables. Where does this piece go?

Size reference would help alot but I'm guessing it a cable housing ferrule with the longer part being a dust/moisture guard. Probably a universal piece included with a cable kit which may or may not be needed for your setup. How big is this piece and did it come with a cable kit???

Here is another pic. I’m guessing the bigger end takes the place of a ferrule at the derailleur?

It's a seal for a ferrule w/ the little tube sticking out. Supposed to keep the cable clean and dry inside the housing. I've never really used them.
