87/88 Team LeMond w an issue - what is it worth and can it be fixed?

Took a look at a bike for sale nearby.

Not a DS stamped frame.
Picture heavy.
What is it worth, and can that frame be saved (and I have done a search so my guess is - I don't know).
Seller honest and disclosed the crack and that he has sprayed it w a bit of paint (see the drip) twice over 10 years.

crack has been there 10 years, seller disclosed and has also painted over it, himself twice in that time. saw a bit of discoloration around it at one point, but could see nothing when he last had cranks and cassette out.

presents pretty nicely and rides nicely.

a little paint breakdown and rust on same side as the small crack. Not Delle Santa

mcGivered bolt

small crack

had frame prof set to 130. Also has original hubs and wheels but one rim is cracked.

Figure out the worth of the parts. Having the frame fixed and refinished makes it a total loser, if it even can be done remotely affordable. Which it likely cant.

What is the asking price?

If the bottom bracket has been painted over, and cracked again, there likely is some movement there.

A boroscope might tell you if the crack is following the lug, or the tube is loose. Which would tell you if it is easily reparable.

Marking the end of the crack, then riding as normal will tell you if it is getting worse.

As @nesteel suggested, take the value of the fork, plus the value of the components, and come up with a value. $200? $300?

Then mark the ends of the crack, and ride it.

I had a similar vintage Bianchi which cracked in the same place. Easy fix for my local frame builder.

Far too high for a broken frame IMO. I agree with others that the value is that of the parts.

$600? The derailleurs might be worth that. Lots of value in that C Record stuff. Maybe $1000-$1400 in parts there? That crack, I don't know, almost looks like a paint crack at the lug line. For $500-$600, at worst you might end up making some money on the parts and even keeping a couple of them (I have that front and rear deraileur. They are like jewelry!) (Just noticed the crack in the front derailleur. A 150-200 setback in the parts value. Still. )

Ya there's a bit of money in parts there.

Cobaltos, crank, RD to begin with. If I were in the mood, I'd offer $400 and feel fine about it.

Don't count on the frame (other than the fork) being worth anything other than to hang on your wall.

Well I'm a professed Lemond bike nut and have always wanted one of these. That is the best model of the Team Lemond bikes. For $600 bucks I'd take the gamble myself although I would offer less at first. So for the normal buyer....maybe $400 if the two problems we see are it.

And yeah I wouldn't even blink about the price because that's a beauty worth just displaying if it's not rideable.

The frame looks like it can be fixed a good brazer welder can either braze or weld the crack and touch up the white paint, just that it will cost a couple hundred if done right which is about what the frame would be worth undamaged. So I'm with figuring parts value at $300-400.

I had a De Rosa Primato with a similar issue. It was an easy fix, but a repaint was needed.

As others have noted, it is probably worth it for the parts, if you want to mess with them. The BB needs to be re-brazed..

Thanks for posting the pictures. If you decide against it could you post where it’s for sale? I have a similar non DS Team Pro and a sister bike would be neat. Thanks!

handsome bike. I kinda hope it gets fixed, regardless of price, and enjoyed on the road.

I disagree that the frame is toast. Why not post the photos on the frame builder's forum here and get some input. I can't imagine that being a difficult fix for an experienced hand.

And I also agree that there is a lot of value in the parts alone. And finally, remember, many will tell you what THEY would pay, not necessarily what a reasonable valuation might be. If you can haggle and get the price reduced, based on a legitimate estimate of what it will take to properly fix, then do so.

One could greatly reduce the cost of fixing this by completely stripping the bike down and the paint from the cracked BB and just taking the bare frame to be fixed and then repainting touching up that part yourself which could be done with basic white pretty easy to look OK.

Vintage Lemond Pro Race Bike - $600 (Raleigh)

Posted 2022-09-17 09:24

"Real steel 1ate 1980's pro road race bike. High mileage, so not all original parts or wheels
are now on this bike. Tracks straight and rides smooth. Easy no hands handling. Excellent
vintage restoration project, since this is a 35 year old bike, so well over 100K miles. Rim
brakes require real man hands on the control levers, so no limp wrist when using these campy
cobalto brakes. Headset has smooth upgraded bearings so no pitting problems with steering.
C-Record rear derailleur and crankset are original parts, and have vintage value. Will install
your pedal system on the cranks. Local pickup in Raleigh only. No shipping. This bike could be
repainted, re decaled, and have high collector value. Synchros-2 rear shift lever works in indexed
shift mode but can also be set to friction mode. Italian frame and bb threading.

bicycle frame material: steel

bicycle type: road
brake type: caliper
condition: good
frame size: 56 cm
handlebar type: drop
make / manufacturer: Lemond
model name / number: Team Pro
wheel size: 700C"

(Seller's name is Terry. We emailed back and forth the day he posted it. Passed, and passed on the post in the "Are You Looking.." thread the same day.)

Seems like there’s a detail missing in that Craigslist ad…

While I agree it could be a relatively easy fix (+repaint) for someone who wanted to take it on, I would not ascribe any value to the frame as is.

Really? I wouldn’t pay that for C-Record even if it came with the special tools.

The OP said the owner touched it up twice and is still shows up. I’m no Smitty and never been trained in the metallurgical arts, unless you count A-4 Corrosion Control school, but I’m pretty sure that frame is cracked.

This is true, was not in the original ad. That said soon as I emailed the seller he alerted me to the issue, before i went to go check the bike.

1987 Team Lemond Pro Made by Della Santa

There were 20 of these made as part of a prototype run of 20 bicycles made in 1987 by Roland Della Santa before production was done by Bilato.
Any idea of the value of this bike?. There is bike with serial #01 listed on Ebay currently for $19,000 which seems crazy high.
My estimate on this perfect example is around $3000? Does anyone out there have one out there that has one or can give me a reference point?
Note the pantographing "Lemond" on the stem, seatpost, levers, cranks, chainrings, and derailleurs.
"DS" stamped on bottom bracket
Paint is pristine.

I’d say you’re in the right neighborhood,price-wise.
Give or take a couple hundreds, depending on motivation of the seller and liquidity of the buyer.
Couple years ago had a serious discussion with a gent who owned one of these and we agreed that $1800 was a fair price.
But that was then, this is now
Bikes like that typically swap via private sales, not eBay or CL.
