Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those of you that have speedplay zeros, do you default in using the cleat covers or only slide them on when needed... or just not use them at all?
I'm referring to these:
https://www.wahoofitness.com/devices...leat-cover-buy

I ask only because of the high probability of them becoming roadside debris after a while of being used; They like to deform & fall off, if one is quick to cross an intersection in a hurry or alike situation.

I use them all the time. Never had one fall off. Besides, it's less expensive to replace the cover than the cleat itself.

This is the first I've seen those covers, and I've been using zeros since 2004. That would have been nice all these years.

at first I thought the same, but after a few months of just stowing them instead of having them on,I have not noticed any wear differences.
I'll slip them on along with the plugs when I have to talk a little bit.

the kit comes with them, but in yellow.
It looks like the OEM caught on to the preferred colored [black] which would have saved an extra purchase of the knock offs that are already black.

Never had an issue finding them whenever they came off walking around if i forgot to plug the cleat area. Usually they are lost for good if they come off as described in the OP. I will not play frogger for them.

Same here. Been using them for years (the yellow ones, with Speedplay Zero pedals/cleats). I've never had one come loose.

for the Speedplay X's for years. Never lost one or had one fall off.

I've tried a few aftermarket brands, & the durability seems minimally different. The ebay cheap ones are the better value [quantity] as I'm less concerned about losing one, but it gets old having to be conscious when spinning off from a busy intersection.
I think shoe stiffness is a factor for them becoming a sloppy fit over time.

They're meant to be kept on there, not to be put on and taken off when you need them. In the time since the walkable cleats became available, I've never lost one. I did replace a set once, when one got smooshed pretty badly out of shape, but I've never had one come loose on me. I would suspect that you've either got an aggressive, twisting gait or (more likely) that you didn't get them on firmly enough in the first place, it does take a bit of work.
