It's definitely a 1985 model manufactured in 1985, as that logo style was unique to the 1985 model year.

After 20-ish years sitting in a basement it’s in good shape - shifts okay, brakes pads seemed to have little use, some expected dings in a nice bright red paint job.
Tonight I got to work:
- trued the wheels,
- cleaned most everything,
- tossed the seat, brake pads, rubber grips, tires and tubes (only keeping the cables and housing for measuring replacements another day),
Then replace cables, housing, add spare seat, maybe some more swept back bars, Newbaum’s tape and twine grips.
This long thread is an interesting read; loads of interesting bikes.

Thanks T-Mar! I’m curious if you have any other insights about this bike.

Sorry, I don't how the maximum size the frame will accommodate. I don't have 1986 specs but the 1985 version was spec'd with 26" x 1.5".

1987 Nishiki Modulus
Here is my Nishiki Modulus I acquired a little over a year ago, stripped down, and built back up. The serial number is WG13859. From your info, it looks to be a 1987 Model. On a side note, I am looking for the Mixtie version of this bike. I've seen examples online but never any for sale.

I'm not sure if this was available in a mixte version. It's looks like it may have been about one rung to high on the ladder to have been offered as a mixte.

While the serial indcates indcates 1987 manufacture for the USA market, this would appear to be a 1988 model manufactured sometime in late 1987. The graphics are incorrect for 1987 and there was no Modulus model in the 1987 USA catalog.

Nishiki Backroads, made in Taiwan. Could only find a number that looked to be punched in after it was painted on the bottom bracket.
03 BRY . If there is more, it might be under the cable guide, which is riveted on.

Nishiki Bushwacker
Hi. Looking for information on my Nishiki Bushwacker that was bought in Canada at a garage sale this year. I'm thinking it's late '80s. Unfortunately, not able to post pictures at this early stage of my subscription to the list. Has ChroMo seat stays. Not sure of frameset material. S/N is CJ0 0189. Thanks.

During this era, the Bushwacker was a mid-range model, While built in Japan, it would have been designed in Canada by Norco, who owned the Canadian rights to the Nishiki brand, at that time. The 1990 model was equipped with Shimano Deore LX and had an MSRP of $828 CDN. The 1991 version was downgraded to Shimano Exage 500LX and the MSRP reduced to $750 CDN.

I've been looking for a Nishiki (square tube) Alien for some time, in almost any rebuildable condition. I wanted one of them when they came out in the 1990's but I was poor then, and could not afford one.
During my search I responded to a CL ad indocating an Alien frame for saIe. When I got to the bike I found it to be a Nishiki Areil frame, it seem to be in good shape so I bought it anyway. It was very inexpensive when I burst the owner's bubble that it was not an ALIEN. The faint decals on the bike proved the ARIEL model.
I'm going to build the bike while I continue my search for an ALIEN.
Was hopeing someone could shed some light on what year this frame was built.
Its black with blue spatter, the serial number is W890907701.
If anyone has a line on an ALIEN, I'm all ears, message me.

There were Alien models with rectangluar main tubes produced in both steel and aluminum. The steel model was called the Alien ACX. It used Tange Prestige and was manufactured during 1990-1991. The aluminum version was manufactured from 1991 to 1993 and was called the Alien AL (1991), Alien SP (1992, with suspnsion fork) and Alien (1993, with suspension fork).

It's a project bike to be sure, I haven't decided which way to go with it as I build it back. Maybe retro with updated components.

T-Mar - Thanks for the information. I bought the bike as a frame with a suspension fork attached. I'm not sure if the fork is original or not. It is a steel framed bike and still has the black with blue spatter paint in so-so condition.

The serial number is on the lower part of the seat tube. The frame was made by Giant of Taiwan.

sorry for the late response.
The serial number is Kawamura for the Japanese domestic market. The "D" is for 1994, the year of frame manufacture.
This was the last year of Kawamura frame manufacturing as the factory in Kobe was badly damaged in the1995 Hanshin Earthquake.
This frame looks like the Nishiki "Sigma" Design Series. ("sigma" is a letter from the Greek alphabet). The fork does not match the Nishiki "Sigma".

My "New" Nishiki Olympic 12
I just bought this frame — frame only, no components other than the headset. Original paint, quite dinged up. I'm guessing early- to mid-1980s, based on
My "New Nishiki"
Serial Number GE 02906
Olympic 12 logo, and head lugs with silver lining. Cable guide on top of top tube.
Heart-shaped protrusion under the downtube to stop the shifter levers from slipping
TANGE 5 sticker; also VA registration sticker from '88
DS Suntour dropout with derailleur hanger
NDS Suntour dropout
Overview of frame
Headtube badge
Can some of you Nishiki experts tell me more? Is it possible to pin down the year?
- being a 12-speed, which I presume meant a 6-speed freewheel and a "double-clanger"
- brake caliper drillings bored for recessed brake nuts
- clamp-on down tube shifter levers
- above-the bottom bracket gear cable routing, and top of the top tube rear brake cable routing
- lugged construction

The PG on the tubing decal stands for plain gauge. In other other words. the tubing thickness in constant for the entire length of the tube and not butted at the ends, as found on better grade tubesets. Also, the Tange #5 tubing is only used in the three main tubes of the frame. The fork blades and rear stays are a lesser grade material, likely hi-tensile steel. The frame material and characteristics are indcative of an upper entry level model for the era.

Incidentally, when I removed the fork, I found that the steerer is stamped "TANGE 5". The fork blades, of course, could be anything.
Thanks for all your help. Is there a 1985 or 1986 Nishiki Catalog anywhere?

Nishiki were spec'd by the local importer. Consequently, models could very from one market to another. Often, you could find big differences even between the Canadian and USA models for a specific year. So, if you're trying to rebuild to spec, you to have the catalogue for your specific market and non-American market catalogues can be very difficult to find.
