Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

High 90s here today but we finished our ride at 1:00. A little climbing early and we stopped at a bagel store for a nosh. Came home and nodded off for a while.

Other than the number on the thermometer, that sounds like a really excellent way to spend a day.

That's exactly what I thought. The heat wasn't too bad, actually. We cruised around Santa Clarita, did Sand Canyon to Placerita Canyon and over to Mentryville. It's a dead end canyon behind Stevenson Ranch and the last few miles are closed to cars. The route has sections with no cars which is nice.

Just realized I lost an arm warmer, a sandwhich and a sweet and salty bar today while cycling.

The pockets on the team kit don’t seem to hold stuff very well.

Bam's neck of the woods is, comparatively speaking, wonderfully wide open... it's just too bad about the limited shoulders and occasionally homicidal drivers.
Homicidal drivers only appear on two sections of road. News Road which we have discussed before, and Monticello. I avoid both, but the scalpers live in Newport News not Williamsburg and I was following them that day. After the ride I told them they needed to make some changes.

Interestingly enough, most cyclist not from immediate Williamsburg area hate Centerville. That’s the one road I feel the safest on. Wide shoulder that is designated as a bike lane. I do find it unnerving when a car passes me with plenty of space, only to drive completely onto the bike lane 100 feet ahead of me. Obviously on their cell phone.

Hot and muggy middle of the day. Pleasant and muggy in the morning, with cool and muggy after the daily rain. The change of the season is nice. But it brings with it so much more work, crammed in between rains, that it gets old fast. If you let it. These last couple years I find myself preferring Summer to Winter, which is exactly the opposite of almost all non-natives here. Of course it also brings tropical storms and the occasional hurricane.
See sig.

I got mine when I was 19 in 1982. That's very attractive for a college sophomore. It wasn't for reading but some sort of lazy eye thing. My eyes are so lazy they won't even pay attention.

I got my first pair of glasses in 1988, when the newly-Mrs. GeneJockey got tired of being asked to read distant road signs. She asked the eye doc what my vision was like. He said, "He's got astigmatism, which makes everything appear taller and thinner than it really is."

She said, "Does he HAVE TO wear glasses?"

Then, the first week I got them, feeling very self conscious, I went with some friends to a local sandwich shop. One of the sandwich ladies shouts out, "Who's next?", and another sandwich lady says, "The guy with the glasses." So much for "Nobody will even notice."

Hoo boy. Last rehearsal before showtime and I lost my place in this song and another one. Not ideal. Got homework to do.
