Parts for Classic and Vintage?

I have a few vintage bikes which I am working on and I am having a hard time finding parts such as brake pads for Weinmann and Mafic brakes. Is there a one stop on-line bicycle parts supplier that has a good selection of goods and small parts for those of us who like to repair and restore classic and vintage bikes?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

There are few threads on the subject. Kool Stop Continental pads are probably best for your Weinmann brakes and they also make replacements blocks for your Mafacs

Though it is nice to find original issue brake pads, I tend to opt for modern ones. They are not easy to detect and, generally, do a better job of stopping. As for where to find the original items you see, one of the best places to shop is right here on Bike Forums market place. Most of us have this that and the other thing tucked away and we are, often times, willing to share our stashes with others. That said...

Be careful with old pads. Sometimes the rubber compound has hardened and become unfriendly to alloy rims. Not only unfriendly to the rims but the stopping power can also be diminished.

All my bikes, and current builds are vintage, and with few exceptions, most of the components, many nos, came from eBay. Lately from eBay international sellers in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, and Poland.
Have also purchased vintage, and vintage compatible components, from Yellow Jersey in Arlington WI, they have a pretty good supply of old bike stuff, especially small parts, checkout their website.

Good luck in your quest, which I have found, is a good part of the fun in a vintage build.
Sorry, but no such thing as a one stop online source for vintage parts, but it’s all out their somewhere.

...MAFAC center pull calipers work very well with brand new brake shoes that are usually designated "Cantilever brake pads" The sort that work on Weinmann center pulls are often designated as "V Brake pads". Sometimes you have to shop around to get something with a short enough pad that it doesn't interfere with the fork as the brake opens and closes. And the ones that are longer on one side of the post than the other only work sometimes, without modification.

Make sure you measure the post diameter you're replacing, and check that the diameter of what you are buying is the same diameter.

I would suggest moving this thread to the regular C&V forum since this forum is for folks looking for price evaluations and not searching for parts and suppliers. I know that I would have not seen it except for the fact that I was trying to get a value estimate on something. It seems that great info is being passed along, but that same info may be getting missed by folks who are not coming to this forum for appraisals but still need parts.
Just a thought.

You will find it pays to broaden your horizons on much of this, the sussing, sorting, digging and fishing for this stuff will pay of in spades along the way.

It can very much be about the journey looking for and finding these things, you will often not find what you are looking for and find another avenue that leads to something else you need before circling back to where you started and then facilitating the earlier need.

Patience is key, you have to wait for some of this to come around, in the meantime, continue to look for other clues.

Bottom line like someone else said and especially now that many have dried up or become less useful, no one stop solution for the most part although efbay is still the closest to it.

There's also Boulder Bicycles, Velo Orange and Rene Herse bicycles for internet sales. Also, there are still a few old timey bike shops and bike coops remaining in some communities. Look around Just stay away from the chain stores like Trek, Specialized and Giant. They will be of no help.

Thanks everyone for your replies and all of the information provided. I've been trying to shop locally for bike parts and I've had little luck in finding what I am looking for or the stores were not very welcoming knowing that I am working on old bikes. As merziac stated "Patience is key" and I guess I have all winter to get my old bikes ready.
Cheers,

Nice job on the on the Dia Compe brake pad mount. However, why didn’t you spend another 3 dollars and buy the Dia Compe straddle cable too? I’ll be polite and just say that the one depicted, has seen better days.

If you're looking for older Weinmann brake pads (eg. Weinmann 500 side pull) here's the list I made:Kool Stop Weinmann X - open one end of the original Weinmann holder to insert new pad.
Kool-Stop Continental
Dia Compe 76 Grey Matter

Those are all current manufacture, and the "Weinmann X" are an exact replacement, although the 'Salmon' version is supposed to be the best and is orange.

One of the bikes I am working on is near pristine 1970's CCM Silver Ghost and I was hoping to keep it as original as possible. The back brake pads are Weinmann 4 dot and the front are 6 dot but the Kool-stop replacements are not available according to my LBS and so far no luck online.

just to note shops vary widely in their knowledge of C&V, Interest in C&V, interest/ability to source C&V parts beyond standard suppliers. Not good or bad on any shop, just how it is

Thanks for the links for the Kool-Stop brake pads, unfortunately they have no stock. I did find a shop in Halifax, Nova Scotia that have the Jagwire Basics in black rubber for $5.99 plus 15% off and free shipping so I'll try them out. Maybe I shouldn't be finicky about finding exact matches!
