Cycling Smartwatch Recommendations

I am in the market for a smartwatch that has good cycling functionality. What do people recommend? I am most interested in stress, sleep and recovery data and analysis (HR, HRV, Sleep stages, etc).

Please let me know if there is already a thread for this and I will follow it.

There are watches like Apple and Samsung that are very good at extending the smart magic of your phone onto your wrist, and have ok cycling modes. These have beautiful screens and short battery life.

There are watches like Garmin, Suunto, Coros, etc that are made for sports use, have excellent cycling features, and are ok about smart features but not great. These have great batteries usually and decent screens.

I've been very happy with the Garmin Fenix watches.

+1 on Garmin watches. I used my Forerunner 745 for a year until recently when I bought a dedicated bike computer.

I ended up with a Forerunner 735XT, as the price was right ($150). It may not be the latest/greatest but I’ll cut my teeth on this and see about an upgrade down the line. Either that or it’ll get posted for sale ; )

I have the Fenix and am happy with it, particularly the display. Upon the sage advice of Seattle Forrest and others, I only record my bike ride activities on my Edge. But I picked up a vintage bike recently and rode it without all the Garmin stuff. I did record that "activity" with the watch only. It worked well, including sending the Live Track info to She Who Must Be Obeyed, and and sending the data to Connect. It is not cheap, but it has worked.

DO NOT GET a withings watch. I got one for my wife, and it has been an absolute disaster. Total fail.

In my experience, getting accurate sleep data from a watch is a very tough thing to do. I think it is mainly because sleep is analyzed according to a bunch of indirect measurements (breathing, heart rate, movement, etc). The net result is that I can get a terrible night of sleep and my watch (an otherwise stellar Garmin Venu 2) will gas-light me and tell me how wonderful it was.
