Nitto "Crystem", 1982 Fuji Newest. The Crystem was the standard stem on many of the Professionals and Newests in the late '70's and early 80's

It's on a FedEx truck right now, heading east .. Keith was kind enough to do some restoration and polishing on a Crystem and Superbe seat post. I don't have "before" photos but I never imagined they'd look this good when he was done.

Thanks. I like it a lot better than the Miami Vice colors that were popular at the same time. The crank is a SportLX, same as the rest of the components. They're all powder coated grey or white, so you can't even polish them to add some sparkle. The catalog shows black Biopace chainrings, but it had regular 52/42 chainrings when I found it.

Can any of you FUJI experts weigh in on this bike? It's for sale in my area, but other than it being a FUJI I don't know anything about it. Can anyone guess what year/model this is? I just bought a bike, but I've read some good things about FUJI's and am considering buying this one as well. Thanks.

^ I'm going to take a guess and say that's a mid to late '70's S10-S. Hard to tell from that small photo.

S10's are great bikes, bomb proof, great ride and easily worth $69 if it's in good shape and it fits you.

I just picked up an '81 Fuji America last week that should get posted up on here if I could only figure out why the attachment won't load! It doesn't have any decals anymore and the only SunTour left on it is the dropouts, but it's a sweet, sweet bike. The original owner clearly loved it, but the owner I bought it from just as clearly neglected it. There's some rust on the chrome and the original pedals are gone, replaced by Scott clip in things. Work is in progress fixing both of those.

Not sure what my plans are for the bike at the moment. I had planned a full touring build but the wheels are 27" so that might be out the window. Pics to follow soon I hope!

Edit: I should point out that the SunTour stuff was replaced with Campy NR and Shimano Dura Ace DT shifters and brakes!

Displacement, congratulations on your new bike!

If wheels are 27" then either they are not original, or your bike is not actually Fuji America - some of the Fuji Touring series had 'america' spelled on them just to confuse us, mere mortals.
Easiest way to tell is paint, only Fuji America had that 'rainbow blue' paint with 2 different shades of blue, and it was the only color for it as well (at least, after 78 or 79, they came in burgundy before that).

1980 Fuji America that I recently restored came with non-original (and trashed) 27" wheels, and while they kinda fit, brakes pads were pushed all the way up, and looked wrong. I replaced them with 700 wheels - much better fit.
Original wheels were 700x28c UKAI rims on Sunshine hubs, sealed bearings, 36 spokes front and rear. I wish my bike came with original rims.

And by the way, I am not sure if Fuji America is a perfect bike for full touring build - it is one fast and comfortable bike, not really a heavy-duty tourer. I would say it is more of a 'rando' bike.

Olek - I was aware that the bike came as 700 but since nothing else is original I figured the wheels were replacement pieces. The paint job is what I was going by - it's clearly original and after scouring classicfuji.com I haven't found any other bike with the same paint job other than the America.

I was actually planning to ask what a good plan would be for my bike going forward. I don't have room for more than 1 bike, really, and I'd like to use it for recreation, carrying me to work, and grocery getter duty. The longest rides I was planning were about 10 miles at a time, so I guess full touring is a pretty poor description of what I was thinking of. I really just like the look of a bike with fenders/racks/lights

I see, you are well-informed already Yes, that paint job is unique, there is nothing quite like it. I also used the paint job for identifying the bike that seller described as 'Fuji'.

I think that bike will fit your needs very well. You surely can outfit it with fenders/racks/lights, it is just it is not the best kind of bike for hauling of 80lb+ of luggage over thousands of miles, and good news is you are not planning anything like that. For commuter / grocery getter this bike is as good as it gets, just treat it nicely. I have heard that it handles front load very well, have not verified that yet. One thing is... if you want to use fenders, you will likely need to switch it back to 700c wheels... otherwise you will have no clearance for fenders.
