Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A few weeks ago, my wife ran an idea by me for the kids - dance class for the girl, Swedish school for the boy, both on the same morning. Dance class is in the southern 'burbs, Swedish is in the middle of the metro, our house is somewhere in between.

The route would have to be:
  1. Drop off for Dance
  2. Drop off for Swedish
  3. Head straight back to pick up at Dance (~1 hour course)
  4. Go home to kill a 45 min
  5. Pick up from Swedish
  6. Home
Having chauffeured this family around a lot, I told her that this was madness and that I wouldn't be volunteering. She said she'd was planning on doing all of the shuttling about by herself (even though she doesn't like to drive). I, again, advised that this was madness, but she's insisting, so I told her to do a test drive today (giving me a bit of ride time ). I added up all of the stops on Google Maps - yeah, it's ~60 miles and just shy of 2 hours of driving. Madness.

Stiff winds for the morning ride, but it sure is nice when you plan on fighting in to the headwind and sailing back with a tailwind... and it actually works.

Between a mechanical earlier in the week and the family schedule, I don't have a prayer of making the mileage podium... but I've got the King of Pain average speed locked down with 20.5 for the week

I wonder if they're engineering beans in the lab these days so they don't have to wait for them to actually grow.

I’ll claim King of the Couch.

I can’t even get on a bike right now. Can barely put on my shorts.

Geez, fer someone that recently made a declaration about the only way to brew, you're sure not up to date on your beans and processing, are ya?

There are different varieties of beans grown in different regions, under different conditions (altitude being a big factor) and that undergo different manners of processing to emphasize desired characteristics: in addition to the common washed, dry/natural, and wet-hulled methods, "honey" processing is becoming more popular and there are folks experimenting with stuff like anaerobic fermentation.

FWIW, lately I've been in to medium roasts (but would have been considered a light roast, 'specially for espresso, a short time ago) of dry processed beans from moderate altitudes that are smooth, sweet and notably berry-forward.

Sounds like a good time to grunt around the house in boxers and a wife-beater, beer in hand.

I have an anaerobic process coffee in regular rotation. The roaster considers it a little too intense for a daily cup, but I don't mind it as a daily from time to time.

Nice! One of my local roasters does a natural process Sidama that can be very strawberry - I think the aim was immersion/drip, but I think it makes a really nice espresso, too.

Question: Which hand do you use to open your beer?

Answer: Neither, it should already be open when she brings it to you.

I had a fun ride, started with 11 and one guy and his wife dropped out before the hills. Had a flat and my inflator blew apart, 3rd one, 2 different brands.

Some guy I never met gave me a cartridge and inflator and wouldn't take a replacement cartridge when we finished. Nice guy. I did have a mini pump but happy to not use it.

100 degrees when I got home, so it worked out. Didn't really notice too much heat on the bike. Glad I stayed close to home.
