1980 Peugeot Super Competition

After the ‘72 PX-10 I thought my luck would be running out but I recently stumbled across this Super Competition locally.

Reynolds531, Cinelli stem/bars, Campagnolo Hubs laced to Rigida 700c hoops, Stronglight cranks, Royal Gran Compe levers, Spidel calipers, Mafac pads, Simplex groupset, Sedis chain, haven’t really done anything to it but throw on the Laser saddle…

.
...someone loved that bike. They even set it up with Simplex retrofriction shifters, which are the cat's pajamas.

a variety of models had that "Super Competition" decal, my PY10 has it too, so it is not a distinctive model name.

nice find!

I really like this generation of Peugeot PX 10s. I own and ride regularly a 1982 PXN10E which is the same model. It is such a nice riding bike. It has plenty of clearance for 28c tires. The bike came stock with a 13-26 freewheel and the rear derailleur can easily handle 28 teeth; it is rated up to 30. The quality of almost all the parts that came stock on this bike is quite good. The simplex rear drop out works with simplex or campy style rear derailleurs.

I worked in a shop that sold a lot of Peugeots in the 80s. I thought this bike was very good and it tended to fly under the radar as the Italian bikes got all the love. This bike is a heck of a lot easier to mod if you want more generous gearing than an Italian racing bike of that era and will likely fit a little fatter tire as well. I replaced the crank on mine with a late generation 86 bcd stronglight crank. I'm running a 52/38 rings and a 14-28 6 speed freewheel.

Your bike has been modded a bit (shifters, wheels, brake levers, saddle, etc.) but the replacement parts are good particularly the shifters.

Nice blue this PXN, clean frame! Generally I’m not particularly fond of this post-’78 Peugeot livery, but in this color it’s fine.

Out of curiosity, what’s the inscription under the BB shell? Both an engraved s/n and a separate model tag?

3alarmer & bikemig

if one looks at the catalogue page posted earlier it can be seen that the retrofriction shift levers are OEM

It could be modded a bit more to full race bike spec by changing out the heavy chrome steel headset with a Stronglight A9 and cable adjusters on the Dia Compe levers.

I really liked my 1980 PKN-10, but it was one size too tall for me and my elder son needed a road bike, so ... .

Watch the bottom bracket -- mine surprised me by being Swiss-threaded, instead of French. I think this was a transition phase between French and ISO.

Love it! I’ve got a PY10 from 83 and a 1980 PXN like yours only both are Pearl White. Sure wish I could find a blue one. Yours looks very nice.

Peugeot Competition

I have a 1981(?) PKN-10 in the same color. The components are all French and most are branded Peugeot.
I bought it for $10 at a garage sale, and it cleaned up like new. Bill
