Shimano Ultegra DI2 6870 Upgrade question

Hi all,

Greetings, I have been looking at upgrading my Di2 and have few questions even after some research.

What I have

Shimano DI-2 6870 Groupset
SM-BMR-1 Battery mount
SM-BTR-1 External battery (I have 2 of these batteries, one on bike, one backup)
SM-EW-90A Junction box
Garmin edge 530
Latest DI2 firmware upgraded by bike shop during last visit

I want to:

Display current gear ratio in Garmin
Enable Synchro shift
Have simple upgrade path (Newbie with very limited skills)
Reuse my existing 2 batteries and NOT introduce another battery type/charging

My proposed plan:

Replace SM-BMR-1 with BM-DN-100 External mount
Add EW-WU101 External D-Fly Unit

Is this a viable option to achieve my goals? Since my bike does not have seat post battery, EW-WU101 is the best option, correct?

Any recommendations or corrections?

Thanks a lot your time and help,
-maadfw

According to this, your battery has insufficient memory to achieve your goals.
IIRC, even sync can’t be achieved with that battery
.

Further research shows I’m wrong. It works

Best part about that is I corrected myself before TerryDi2C slapped me. 🙂
And it’s his site I just quoted as indicating it works.
I had no idea the battery mount was smart.

I should stick to R8000 & R8100

Maadfw,
did you click the link?
The bettershifting site is well maintained and accurate.
But don’t tell Terry I said so!

Barry,
Yes. That is the site I looked up for the info on this upgrade. Just validating that this works before ordering parts.

Thanks again,

One quick question: should I buy EW-WU101 or EW-WU111 for the above setup?

Hah, Yeah Barry - the external batteries don't have any firmware, that's all in the battery mount ;-).

maadfw - the EW-WU111 / WU101 are functionally the same, but: The 101 is mounted near the rear derailleur, while the 111 is an inline junction. The '111' is used by most people .
There's also the SM-EWW01, but that is an old, ANT-only model.

(summary: I'd get the EW-WU111, but it doesn't really matter)

Awesome, exactly the advice I was looking for! Thanks so much Terry. Appreciate putting together all the info about Di2. Your site has much more useful info than Shimanos' own.

Another follow up. Has anyone installed WU-111 under the stem next to the junction box. All the Youtube videos are talking about installing inside the seat post. I understand it is just inline, but still want to see some actual pictures and understand any gotchas.

thanks,

Shimano actually state that it must be installed outside the frame in their training videos .

You can install it outside the frame no problem, but if your handlebar has a clear path from shifter to drop then that is my personal favourite place to put it

While it is an inline unit, you don't have to connect both ends. If you only connect one side of the unit though, be sure to insert a dummy plug in the other end.
