Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling Caps (Synthetic Materials)

Does anyone know manufacturers/vendors who make/sell traditional style cycling caps made of synthetic materials? I know about only Headsweats making cycling caps (not triathlon race caps, please) specifically out of Coolmax. I want cycling hats made of synthetic and breathable material, as the traditional cotton cycling caps just get too wet for summer in SoCal and the tropics, where I ride. Only looking for other options apart from the Headsweats.

As always, thanks for your positive contribution.

I've got a PI one but usually stick to cotton. I'm fine even in summer. You're not the only one that thinks cotton is too hot. There're two guys in my club that strip off their caps as soon as it warms up.

So I got a Walz hat for xmas. Today was the first nice day for me to wear it. Up until now I have been wearing a fleece winter hat.

I could not get my helmet secure with the Walz cap under it. I was able to easily push the helmet toward the back of my head with the cap on. It just seemed to slide over the material.

Helmet fits fine without the cap and does not have the same issue. I need to resize my straps so that the cap fits comfortably under the helmet, but I don't think that is the issue.

Anyone experience this?

For me it was all about the beak of the cap. I got tired of mouldy cardboard. That's why we went EVA. You can scrunch it in a ball and stuff it in your jersey pocket with the skittles. You can toss it in the wash with the rest of you gear time and time again without concern.

Isn't that what a synthetic cap should be able to do as well as wick better than cotton?

I just got the Walz tropical weight worsted wool cap and it is dreamy! I'd put it up against any cool max stuff anyday(actually I have a headsweats running cap and this one beats it for cooling ventilation). And it has a coolmax sweatband lining the inside brim of the hat, which is extra assurance I suppose.
I haven't had issues with fitting any of my cycling caps under my helmets or slippage. One of my helmets is a Giro with Roc loc and the other is a cheap Bell Wally World purchase. They both work fine with the caps on.

I'm not sure what material is inside the brim on the Walz caps, but it's soft, flexible as needed and washable. If I can find out later, I'll edit here.

Edit - I emailed Walz, here's the response: "It is a fabric stabilizer so it is completely washable and won't crack or disintegrate. Just make sure if it is a wool cap, you hand wash in cold and air dry."

Do any of these synthetic caps "feel" as light or lighter than traditional caps?

They look comfortable and probably much more breathable, but they also look thicker.

I actually talked to the owner of Walz before I ordered my synthetic material cap from him. I explained that I also ride in the tropics, so I want a cap that wicks well. I was thinking about his 60/40% poly/cotton blend, but he steered me toward his 100% poly cap. His explanation was that his cotton is a little bit thicker than the usual "cycling cap cotton," so the full poly hat was what I ordered.

By the way, real nice and helpful owner.

That EVA beak soaks up sweat pretty well too.
