I recently bought this Alan Record from an Italian eBayer. Battistini is a bicycle shop in Rome that still exists. I see the shop has a Facebook page. I have always been curious about the ride of these bikes. The frame needs a thorough cleaning and I will replace some of the decals. I will post additional photos when complete.

I bought the frame from an Italian eBayer with the SR seat post and Record BB. The seat post is good. The BB was junk. I probably have 6 or more hours cleaning 37 years of dirt and grime off the thing. There are a fair number of scratches on the anodized tubes, but it looks good from 5 feet away. I used as many of the parts as I had on hand to build it except for the CLB brake calipers and the new spokes. The bike was sold through a Roman bike shop called Battistini, which still appears to operate. They have a Facebook page and I sent them a note when I got the frame. I might send them a note with a photo of the finished bike. and see if they respond to that. The down tube decals were shot. I measured up the original down tube decals and I could always have new ones made. Other than the CLB brakes calipers, which are around 100 grams lighter than record brakes though not nearly as nicely made I didn’t use any weight weenie parts. I don’t know what year Dia-Compe came out with the aero levers, but I’m thinking around 1985 and are about period correct? I used yellow label Fiamme tubular rims. 19.4 pounds as shown. Ride report later today!

I rode the Alan Record 37 miles this morning on one of my standard routes and I'm impressed. At least under these 62 year old legs, the bike isn't a flexi-flyer. The ride quality is excellent. It does everything a proper racing bike should do. It felt very much like some of my steel bikes. I was able to buy this frame for a good price and figured why not give it a try. Being a traditional steel bike guy, I have always found Alans to be curiosity, but after riding this bike today I think Alan frames/bicycles may not get all the respect from the vintage bike community that they should! A couple of photos from this morning's ride.

Since last week someone thought I don't need the daily beater Peugeot Aspin anymore, I had to put the Alan to use again as the Rossin is even less a child carrier. After not moving a meter since 1,5 years, I felt like flying after pug, same like when I first put it together, it was shockingly light. It came to me as a damaged (usual cracked head lug) but already repaired frame from The Netherlands, and it literally costed peanuzz. Now as I bring my 17kg daughter to the kindergarten every day I can confirm, the welder made a good job, so did Alan with the rest of the bike. It's from 85 Jan if I remember properly, and no signs of glued lugs coming loose even against the current abuse.

current state (literally just dropped together to be able to move) with black Campagnolo Mirage, but still with sanded 600 Tricolor brake levers and without shifters. It will get Ergos once I find a better suiting rear wheel, as the SUP Ceramic it used to have earlier is gone with said Peugeot


Against being a real bin build, its still the beautiful art object here and a funny conversation starter when people see it and start the "of how nice, I would like a classic bike as well, but they are so expensive these days", then the look on their face when they learn that it costed half what they would spend on a cycling shirt.

Only a month later. Also a Record. I should give you mine for the fine treatment you've given yours. I agree with your sentiments about the ALAN. I ride old steel, but this came into my hands and it is such a fun rider. Yup. Very nice.
