Change cable on Alivio

My bike is probably 25 years old with original cables. How do I open this Shimano Alivio front shifter to install a new cable?

View1 shows one screw. Do I open that?

View2 shows two screws on the handle, and the clamp screw. Do I open them?

(sorry about the big picts, I haven't figured image size with Flameshot)

Isn't there an access port in the plastic cover? Generally about across from the exit port (with it's adjuster). Sometimes this access port is plugged with a plastic "screw".

Shimano does offer their directions on line too, in case you learn by reading. Andy

I think what Andrew described applies on this model shifter. Just be aware that you need to be shifted to the gear position that fully releases the cable to push the old cable out and the new one in.. This is almost always the highest number gear on a rear shifter.

Shift it to the smallest cog whether this is the front or back shifter. Small being physical size, not small ratio. Then disconnect the cable from the DR pinch bolt and push on the cable. Preferably from the closest point to the shifter you can find a bare piece of cable to grab and push on. Possibly pull the cable housing back from the shifter to expose bare cable to push into the shifter. I think the end of the cable will appear magically from the shifter body.... unless something is plugging the hole. <grin>

However Shimano has most every bit of documentation for it's stuff from day one available to you. Go to https://si.shimano.com/#/ and plug in the model number and version of your shift lever. SI's sometimes take a little getting use to, but look at the pictograms and read and all will be revealed. Well maybe not all but everything you really have to know.

Sorry for the poor quality picture. This is a screen capture from this document. This is the “screw” that Andrew Stewart is talking about. You should look for what looks like a Phillips screw on the between the shift paddles.

^This^ The screw is black plastic. Make sure the shifter is in high gear position before removing or installing a cable.

Good video that shows how to do this. Always used to find RJ the Bike Guy helpful on questions like this:
