Garmin Edge 830
I bought a Garmin 830 and updated it as the manual said. The latest "approved" firmware was 9.1. Well when I was attempting to use the Garmin it kept stopping on miles and speed while the timer continued to run. I called the Garmin service and while they were very helpful and talked me though all of the setup several times, it wouldn't run for more than a couple of minutes before seizing up. Now, if the unit runs at all it probably has good hardware so you don't have to worry about sending it back.
Finally they recommended a trial version 9.26 of the firmware to see if that would fix my problem. Well, it did and the Garmin Edge 830 now runs properly. There is a little trick or two to installing the firmware if they haven't approved it as the latest version yet so if you're having the same sort of problem call up the service people and have them talk you through installation.
These Garmin products are pretty unbreakable. But they are now making so many different products that they don't have enough good firmware programmers to properly test the firmware out properly.

Interesting. I think my 830 told me there's a pending update ready to be installed. Hopefully it doesn't brick my device. It's been faultless so far.

I don't recall there being any.
If any real number of people had the issue, it's likely there would have been a stink about it. Especially, it being a problem with a basic function, which every user is using every time they use the device.
So, I'm not sure if you can draw the conclusion that there's a general problem from this single event (as annoying as it would be!).
From what I can tell, the Beta versions tend to be fairly tame. That is, you really shouldn't have a problem with it.
The 9.10 firmware has been out for 4 months. If it was a general problem with the software, there would have been lots of noise about it a while ago.

Some of the changes they made for how maps are display in 8.xx and beyond annoyed me, so I reverted to 7.10 and am leaving my 830 like that for the foreseeable future. I use a custom OSM based map which shows me where things like traffic lights, fence gates and water fountains are, but in an act of map decluttering they made the gps stop showing POIs with no way to re-enable them. Unless you go all in on the garmin ecosystem lights, power meters etc there is rarely anything of particular use in the firmware updates and they are more trouble than they are worth.

You should see if there are other complaints on the actual Garmin forums about the issue you had.

There's a note about an issue with distance (no mention of any issue with speed).
This change was made in the beta versions for the 530, 830, 1030, and 1030+. I never saw the issue with the 1030 or the 1030+ I have.

- Fixed issue where distance could stop accumulating.

Today my 830 Connect app asked me to sign in before it would upload. It has uploaded dozens of times without asking for that. After going through a few screens on the Connect app, it decided to upload by itself. Strange. No update was offered.

Mines running 9.1 and has been totally reliable. However, since it's basically a small computer there's probably some setting you have that I don't which is triggering the issue.

That and the marketing departments habit of misleadingly bright/saturated screen images completely unlike the actual faded weak color displays.
After v9.10 broke the connection to my ANT+ lights I ended up downgrading to 7.10 and there I've stayed. There is also a technique to prevent automatic firmware updates, if I remember correctly it's to create a blank file, name it GUPDATE.GCD and place it in the \Garmin folder.

- A few people had the problem (we know that because the beta addresses it).
- Not that many people had the problem (we know that because there aren't any complaints about it in the Garmin forums).

I didn't say it was "a problem they are unaware of". What I said was that it didn't appear it was a problem that people had generally or commonly.

If everybody had had the problem (or if it was vaguely common) , there would have been lots of complaints. I don't recall seeing any complaints about about it in any of the 4 forums.

If it was a common problem, it doesn't make sense that no one on that fairly-active forum said nothing about it. It makes even less sense there was no mention of it in the other 3 forums.
Units like the 830 I used to design and program though generally in medical instruments. Perhaps the 830 made changes to the circuit board that was the cause of this problem and the new firmware version was required to adjust for some slight difference in the hardware. Remember that the differences between all of these Garmin's is functionality. Right now the windows aren't exactly what I want but I'm not going to change anything because it does give me all the information, just in different spots than I would like.
The same exact change is listed in the beta for 4 units. (So, it's not a 830 specific issue.)
Again, I'm saying the problem isn't common. It appears rather rare (given that it would be easy for nearly every user to notice it and there has not been any apparent mention of it).
