Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bike products that should exist but do not.

im amazed at some of the doofy cycling products that make it to market, but think of some things which would actually be useful. ill start. id like a cycling visor for road helmets. like a golf visor but with the micro brim of a bike hat. i like the sun/bug deflecting properties of a bike hats brim but sometimes the hat is too hot underneath a helmet. also, truly full coverage and quickly removable road fenders. those half fenders with the rubber straps (race blades, planet bike ez's) are alright. but just alright. the little pegs the bands strap to often break off and they always end up scratching your paint. sks came out with some full coverage race blades this year so ill so what the scoop is.....whats your dream product?

Helmets designed with a cavity in the lower-back to contain two or four 18650-sized lithium cells.

Fat but lightweight tires made from extraterrestrial nanotechnologies.

Jerseys that don't look dorky.

Electrically-heated shoes for winter.

^^^no, its too big and sits too high up as its flush with the bottom of the helmet. i like the bike hat visor/glasses combo because the visor can overlap the top of the glasses and point down, not straight out. if you ride by swampy terrain and rivers you appreciate the bug deflecting abilities of this combo. normal visor dont do squat for deflecting bug, just branches. or an entire bike hat made of perforated material would be cool. ive got a castelli hat like that. the front panels are cotton but the rear panel is a perforated polyester mesh which works great to keep the back of your head cool but an entire hat like that would be great!

yeah. see that giro is a step in the right direction. bern has been with the micro brim idea for awhile but missed the ventilation boat. those ffffrs are hot! im thinking a true road helmet with huuuge vents, but also this small type of brim. i like seeing crossover tech between urban cycling and roadie stuff.

Patagonia used to make exactly that. It was entirely polester mesh with a double layer solid brim of more or less bike hat design.

Addendum: Helmets designed with a heat/chemical/explosion resistant cavity .....

For the "shoes" you can use electric heated socks, driven off a dynamo hub.. :-)

What is needed is a transparent polarized visor so it doesn't block vision like a solid visor while acting as a bug/rain deflector and keeping me from being blinded by sunlight.

I'm thinking of hacking my visor.....

So, on the hats, you take a bike hat and cut out the top leaving the brim and the headband. that allows air across your head and the headband and brim keep sweat from dripping down your face.

I've been doing that ever since hard bike helmets came out, when it is hot (like now).

I use my thumb. Push down the right nostril, blow out the left, Switch, rinse and repeat.

Learned that from my hockey days. The inside of the boards on the bench is not the cleanest palce on earth.

Kantoboy misspoke slightly. The strip does not clear out the nasal passages, it opens them by lifting the tissues up away from the bones.

Why don't bottled water mfg's, gatorade, etc. make bottle cage friendly disposable bottles. Most water bottles are either too thin causing them rattle around in the cage, or too big caising the need to wedge them in.

Because it would be far too expensive to blow mould PET in the thickness needed to hold the bottle in the cage, and it's a tiny niche market.

That's what bidons are for, sports bottles aren't designed to be carried in bike bottle holders, bidons are, same as bidons don't fit in car cup holders well, but your Gatorade bottle will.
