WHEN do you put the studs on?

a little early this year. hope I don't regret it too much. heated them up w/ a space heater, rubbed some Armor All on the beads & wiped the insides w/ paper towel. sidewall says 35-70psi. I put 40psi in the front & 50 psi in the back, as a starting point

lots of moisture in the wheels, from the recent water rides I guess

dried off the tubes

checked the 2 patches, as I do, twice a year

forgot the official size they were

noticed 1 had slightly better studs, so I put it up front. I've read that's the best place for the better tire, studs especially.
one is a little deformed from shipping several years ago. they mount up fine under pressure tho

after a test ride in the parking lot, put the bike on the car, then remembered to take the bar ends off & put the barmitts on!

now I gotta go look for trouble, right?

They went on after my ride on Sunday, 12/5. I should put them on *before* that ride, as it was hella icy.

Putting them on was difficult but not as bad as some other times. I did use a tire lever and also some hand soap on the rim. In this case, success cam when I ended the job at the valve, while pushing the valve stem in to get the tube away from the rim.

Schwalbe Marathon Winter 35s on Stans ZTR rims.

Mounting studded tires is sufficiently difficult in my basement. At all costs I don't want to change a flat out in the cold, where both the rubber and my hands are stiff and cold. So I'd go with tubes that didn't have patches.

Also, Schrader, huh? ,

tubes are holding up, a cpl years now. but I hear ya. & yeah Schrader on all our family bikes. 7 in all. it's just easier that way & I dislike Presta. no good reason for them anyway. a few of the bikes came w/ Presta & I just drilled them out. no big deal. easy to top off w/ the car compressor too

I win, I put mine on months ago

We only get a couple weeks a year when they are needed so I have extra rims for them. Otherwise I would just sit out those couple weeks, too much drag to ride studs all winter here.

They have stayed on my hybrid for 11 years or so now. I keep thinking of putting slicks on for the summer as it's my only bike with fenders, but it hasn't happened. Maybe next summer...or not!

had a great test ride last night. probably filled them at 50 degrees in my basement & the test ride was at about 30 degrees. the front felt fine, the back may have a felt a little soft. might try another 10 psi in the rear. I must have figured out what pressure I like, at some point in the past. I should write a note & tape the note to the tires, when they come off, to save some trial & error next December

Yup, two minutes to switch. Wheels cost bucks but I have only one bike for road/gravel/commute/winter riding so figure it balances out.

In addition to putting studs on I sometimes sharpen them, though I wait until the pavement is covered. I'll put the bike in the repair stand outdoors (carbide dust is bad for you) and give the top of each stud a few swipes with a diamond file to de-mushroom them. It creates a nice sharp edge. Generally its just the center ones that need work.

Part of me wants to sharpen them to a point, but that would be a lot of effort and needlessly remove too much material.

I think so, doesn't say on the package but similar one from same store lists 150 on the web site.

And another task gets added to winter bike maintenance. A file has been ordered. I'd wondered about such in the past as the studs wear down, but with not having a file to handle the carbide studs, thinking it would be too tedious to do, and having studs wear through the tires and cause flats, and the tire liner to prevent the latter actually causing flats itself, I never pursued it. There was also the thought of swapping all the outer row studs with the inner ones but wow... That would be a job. Plus there's that wearing-through-the-tire issue.

So, I've now installed a Mr. Tuffy liner to see if that takes care of the studs-wearing-through-the-tire-issue-without-causing-flats-itself, and stud sharpening.

Meanwhile, our 8" of snow from Fri's storm is quickly disappearing as here in the Twin Cities we're having a Dec heat wave, including a record high today of maybe 54F, and unprecedented severe storms possible this evening, and a wind warning with winds gusting to 80 mph tonight. I think the road bike will be coming out tomorrow for the next week, giving me plenty of time to put a new front derailleur on the winter bike, touch up some paint, sharpen some studs, probably clean and oil the new chain after only 200 miles and lots of briny slop, and...

Why do we do this?
