Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Okay...I realize that if you take a chain completely apart you'd have a lot more...but only SheldonB is crazy enough to recommend that! https://sheldonbrown.com/chainclean.html

I see a lot of washers and bolts. Maybe about $4 in hardware. Think about all the parts in a television. You can get a 20" tv for less than $200 now. Do they even make CRT tv's any more?

Brakes are only springs, nuts, bolts, and a frame. I bet you could produce a PVC brake for $10 that weighs only a slight bit more than the top notch brakes. Alright maybe not a slight bit more since PVC kinda sucks, but the prices being charged are ridiculous.

No one has posted these yet:

Light, effective and reasonably priced..probably the best bang for the buck in the light weight brake dept.

While those bontragers may be light, effective and reasonably priced, they happen to do it while looking hideous. Those things look pretty darn cheap, and boring, and should not been thrown in this thread, not with some of the finer and more beautiful calipers posted earlier.

Agreed they do not have the looks of the classic brakes in this thread.

But they are lighter and stop better than Record, Force and especially Dura Ace. the fact that they are also less expensive is just a bonus.

55/Rad, I have a 90's Italian single-speed bike I've built up recently, and it's as much about aesthetics as function. It has Campy dual-pivots already that are nice, but not 'Delta' nice.

So, the real question... will later-model Deltas, with the 5-pivots, stop a 250 lb. clyde without much fuss? Do they require a lot more maintenance as a daily 'ride around'? Thanks in advance.

There should be a footnote on #10 that reads: Unless its Rad/55's gear.

Not really. You're comparing the process of a doctor needing to understand the intricacies of the human body vs different ways to make two brake pads squeeze a thin rim. People have been designing levers for many years. There are also many more constants in designing a brake system vs working on the human body. There are standard wheel sizes. There are standard operating parameters. Simply the fact that the only thing powering a bike is a human the brakes are at an advantage. You're more likely to over engineer brakes that will stop too quickly. This is converse to designing car brakes where cars keep getting faster and faster.

I'll stand behind my opinion. Brakes are drastically over priced. They're very simple machines with minimal material required. It's like saying a a single ratchet should cost $200. It shouldn't. It's just a simple machine.
