Yet another PX10 restoration.....

I know there are alot of these postings, so bear with me. I believe this is a 1973, which is what was stamped on the Brooks saddle frame and judging from others I've seen. The last owner said it came to him with turkey levers, which he replaced with the aero levers. So, my theory is, judging from the vintage of the rest of the parts, when it was bought new, someone replaced the wheelset with 27" clinchers, replaced the 21t rear cog with a 32 tooth rear cog (but kept the 52t 45t chainrings), replaced the rear derailleur with a larger Simplex, and replaced the Mafac brakes with the Universal side pull to fit to the 27" wheels, and put in the bar-ende shifters. And then the front derailleur was replaced somewhere along the line. But I have wanted one of these for (oh, about 45 years, off and on), had most of the parts I wanted to swap on hand....

The left crank bolt was severely rusted, so I soaked it in Kroil for a few days, and then drilled into it and applied a reverse helical extractor. Hadn't used one of those before and was relieved that it worked.

Cleaned out the rust spots on the frame, touched up with a little bottle of Rust-Oleum appliance white touch-up that cost $3.25, wet sanded, and then Meguires, new UV laminate decals, and waxed. Swapped the crank for a 52t-42t Stronglight, put on a tubular wheelset with a 24t cog, returned to Mafac brakes, replaced the shifters and derailleurs (Simplex except for the front--which is a Huret to keep it all French), re-tapped the pedal threads and went with SPD pedals, and made a couple other small changes. Not everything is 1973 original, but close enough for me! Have been riding and making some adjustments and quite like it! It tracks nice and straight with hands off (which I am never very comfortable with). Will stick with the Ava stem for now, but will watch that closely.

Beautiful!

Someone else is bound to warn you, but is that stem in far enough? Just thought it was worth a mention...

Not to one-up you, but I waited 48 years for mine.
I agree with the previous comment about checking the stem insertion--it looks to me to be well about the minimum insertion line.

Nice work on your PX-10, kudos for saving the original paint, even if it needed new decals. I like the chrome Simplex downtube cable guide, it's much better than that ugly plastic one, a nice classic touch. Nice work!

I'd suggest that your frame is a 1972, since it has the plain Dubois lugs. The 1971 and 1973 models had the Professional lugs.

Thank you for that note--I had been watching that, and started from what I thought was the highest safe position as I fitted into the bike, but I'll lower it a bit before the next ride!

Very nice - Impressed with the cord wrapping on the bar tape.

Warms my heart bringing these back toward original.

Keep that long cage - i use one for my hill climbing (e.g., eroica) setup.

Lovely bike and excellent return to glory! I'm with jj1091, the plain Nervex DuBois lugs, painted black, combined with the frame angles AND the 531 decal at the top of the seat tube say 1972 to me. In '73 they switched the 531 decal to the top of the down tube, and the ones I have seen had steeper angles. The Nervex Pro lugs came and went over the next couple of years, I suspect due to availability.

I believe that the Reynolds decal was moved to the down tube in 1974.

Okay I checked the stem this morning--it did not have a minimum insertion mark, so I had "eyeballed" this previously. Anyway, found it was inserted 50mm, which I increased to 60mm.
Then checked around on line and found Sheldon Brown recommended 50mm as a minimum: Hands Up (Or Down)! Adjusting Handlebar Stem Height on Your Bicycle

I don't want to be at the bare minimum, and am fairly confident 60 will work out for me, for how I plan to use this bike (morning exercise for 45 minutes or an hour, not long distance).

Will be keeping a close eye on this in any event, and may ultimately swap out the stem anyway--but did want to give the original a try.

Thanks again for raising the issue!

At Bikecology, we were very relieved when it was moved, because the high seat tube position was a recipe for disaster in a shop stand clamp.

That is a great-looking bike and a superb restoration. The 52-42/14-24 classic 1.5-step is a great alternative to the stock 52-45/14-21.

It seems odd that the Reynolds decal was not moved to the down tube on the PR-10 in 1974.

Outstanding work. I saw the first pictures and thought it's not necessary to do much on this bike. Then I saw your work, and I'm glad you did it your way.

It's a nice bike, isn't it?

Great work on this, not normally for mere mortals especially on a hard bolt, Seen many competent lads struggle and not succeed including myself although the competent part is certainly up for debate. That experienced tap handle tells me you had a pretty good idea of what you were doing, Very nice work on the whole thing.

Still waiting for mine......

As Kactus said above, I never get tired of PX10 restorations either.

I love how it turned out and it made me excited to start on mine in a couple of weeks! I was hoping I could ask for some pointers. I love the details so was wondering about:

• the red pulleys (should I get some online or spray them white a thin layer of red and clear coat)
• what kind of cord did you use to wrapping the handlebar tape
• the oval decal by the seatpost (did you touch that up yourself or buy the decal) I did a quick google search and could only find gold ones

I'll attach photos in the next post.

Sorry for the screenshot photos. My phone wasn't giving me an option to press down and save the photos from ebay

I haven't received the bike yet but worried about the seat post

Going to try my best to polish and and shine the components.

Only ordered the Reynolds stickers to replace

Are Rigida rims of decent quality? Not too concerned about getting the original rims but I do like some of the vintage Mavic rims and the red stickers

Very nice indeed, great job of refurbishment! I picked up a 1972 last year - had no idea I needed one but after setting up and riding I discovered what I've been missing. Oh yeah...
