30 Years Ago: April 1990 in Bicycling magazine

I've included the following articles:
Cover feature story about Davis Phinney
Carbon fiber's future
Cycling-related computer bulletin boards
The Jiboffo Technique -- a revolutionary product and riding technique, developed in East Germany, that promises to increase your power output. Yes, I know.
And finally, a sassy Off the Back to leave a smile on your face.

Other good stuff and ads didn't make the first cut, but I'll include one or two within a few days.
As usual, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC and I'll do my best to send you a pdf.
Just send me a PM that includes your email address.

What were “the 5 impressive bikes for as little as $279” on page 166?

I wanted to read the article about "The 10 Best Day Glow Green Skinsuits" on page 177. The article about the most aerodynamic toe clip straps looked interesting as well.

Seriously though, these magazines bring me right back to 1990. I was reading Bicycling every month and also had a subscription to Velo News. I'm really not living (or riding) all much that differently now compared to back then, I'm just much happier, and I have accumulated some much nicer gear than I had back then, too much of it in fact.

I intend to post the article in a future C&V Road Test thread, but can provide it if you want it sooner than weeks from now.

Ha! You made me look. Each decade definitely had it's own vibe.
I might have broken Bike Forums if I had posted the ad in which Kenny Souza is doing the Burt Reynolds/Cosmopolitan thing next to his Nishiki Altron...banana hammock replacing cowboy hat, course.

These issues are great. As someone who has scanned thousands of family photos and preserved them on digital discs, I know how much work scanning stuff can be, so thanks for all the work!

Have you thought about cutting up the magazines and using a sheet-fed scanner? It would be great to have full-issue scans with the ads and everything. I would probably pay something for the convenience of that, rather than squinting at old musty 30 y/o bike mags. But you'd destroy the magazines themselves, and any value they might have.

For most people, the Jiboffo Technique had been forgotten and lost to the mists of time However, I've kept the candle burning for thirty years and welcome its resurgence. My younger friends are always shocked when I blow past them on steep climbs, breathing easy.

I'm glad you're enjoying them. You're welcome.
No, I have never thought about cutting them up, but I agree with everything else you said and feel that way about all old printed material.
I might take the next step and buy a dual-page scanner.
Repack Rider is/was using one for his extensive mountain bike web project.
On the other hand, I'm fast..like a marsupial...so I haven't felt the need to up my game yet.

Yeah? Can you post some video footage of the Jiboffo Master in action.

The ad introducing the original SPD pedals and cleats was a nice bonus in there.

I'd love to, but the current coronavirus pandemic doesn't allow for me to ride along with a camera operator and it's too difficult to juggle both a selfie stick and the Jiboffo kit while also using my arms to power my legs.

Those were some great ads, but it helped that the product was a great product. I was an early adopter of these, since I hated walking around in Time pedals so much. I still use 'em on almost every ride.

IIRC, 1990 was about the time of a regrettable trend in bike products toward everything being in florescent colors, that some say we still haven't recovered from. I would put 1991 or 92 as the peak. Some of the ugliest bicycle paint jobs in history came out during those years, with lots of clothing and helmets to match.

Article form April 1990 edition

Excellent to see these. I'm also trying to locate another article in this edition entitled 'Security devices and measures take a bike out of crime' by Langley and Furman.

Is there any possibility this could be uploaded please? I'm a new member and can't message you directly as per admin rules. It would be really helpful if it could be done and I would be very grateful.

Sure.
And welcome to Bike Forums!
This article has large tables in small print that span both pages so I'm including a link to the pdf version that sometimes makes for easier viewing.
This link should be good for the next 7 days or so. https://1drv.ms/b/s!AgHfxA8atbGnnHbn...LYig3?e=E5ziIW

And I did receive your slightly different message through the BF system.
Good luck with your paper on bicycle crime and earning your degree.
Posting a copy of (or link to) that paper to BF C&V and/or to another relevant forum would be a welcome contribution to BF.
