Japan has to be losing their posteriors with no event ticket sales, merchandise sales, on site vending sales, hotel tax, gasoline tax, public transportation revenue, etc. I will say that it has been one big cluster you know what. I think we all saw it coming, though. My highlight was the women's road race and women's XC race. Watching Neff pull out of a potential crash on the ****ake drop (I think that's what is was named) that would have endo'd 99% of the rest of the mountain biking world was something special.

Edit: It's called the Sakura Drop

Seems like the TT really favoured the guys who lean towards being climbers over the pure TT crowd. Roglic and AVV with amazing rides.

BMX quarterfinals tonight.

Anyone got insight into the event format? I'm not really familiar with how a BMX race is organized. There are 24 riders, 8 per race. The event listing calls it quarterfinals (tonight), semifinals, and finals (tomorrow night) like it's single elimination. Are they started out at random or seeded? top four advance?

Edit, from Wikipedia:
Cycling at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's BMX racing - Wikipedia
The competition is a three-round tournament, with quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. The time-trial seeding run from previous Games has been eliminated. In each round, the cyclists race around a 400 metre course with jumps and banked turns. The competition proceeds as follows:[3][4]
  • Quarterfinals: 4 heats of 6 cyclists each. Each heat has 3 runs, using a point-for-place system (1 point for the winner of a run, 2 points for 2nd, etc.). Lowest points over the 3 runs wins. The best 4 cyclists in each heat (16 total) advance to the semifinals; the others (8 cyclists) are eliminated.
  • Semifinals: 2 heats of 8 cyclists each. Again there are 3 runs per heat, using the point-for-place system. The top 4 cyclists in each semifinal (8 total) advance to the final; the others (8 cyclists) are eliminated.
  • Final: 1 final of 8 cyclists. There is only a single run.

For the record, I am paying attention to the Olympics only insofar as it's part of my interest in cycling.

I lost interest in the rest years ago, just as I lost interest in following any and all professional and collegiate team sports. There seems to be some drama and controversy about these olympics, having to do with gymnasts and other things. I don't pay any attention apart from skipping over those headlines on news.google and the various posts of my friends on FB.

Cycling excepted, big time sports spectacles are a bore.

I don't know why you'd choose cycling as any less boring than any other televised sport. My TV sports preferences tend to racing, need not be bicycles. Racing works a lot better on TV than it does in person, because you see the race leaders or the contest for position all the time and not just once every two minutes when it goes past you (or the one time in the whole day it goes past your "hi grandma" sign). I'm happy to attend a baseball or basketball game with the family but on TV they seem too clinical somehow. Soccer seems like a 2-hour game of keep-away followed by penalty kicks they could have started with and saved all the trouble, while surrounded by drunks; American hand-egg just reminds me of all my nerd resentments of jocks

It is because I am a cyclist. That is all.

More about Neff and that near-endo right where MVP went off. They put the ramp back for the women's race; Prevot brake-checked Neff right before the ramp and Neff barely saved it. Karma got Prevot very soon after

Fields was definitely in contention for a medal and maybe TQ until he crashed out. Despite the DNF in his third semifinal heat, he qualified for the main, but then was DNS. I guess I'm surprised no one got promoted to fill the grid.

Stancil qualified 2nd for the main and came 4th by about 0.4 sec.

BMX Freestyle qualifiers tonight at 9:10 Eastern, 6:10 pacific for the ladies, an hour later for the men

I found a video replay of the men's road race posted by a Japan TV channel, in case anybody's interested: https://sports.nhk.or.jp/olympic/hig...-b2b80b651985/

Does anyone know where I can watch the replays of Olympic road races online? It seems that here in the United States NBC has a monopoly on it and is restricting it everywhere unless you subscribe and pay . Any links or websites are much appreciated.

Watching the BMX freestyle final.

The men's runs are a lot more powerful with a lot of front flips and double backflips, more elaborate ramp tricks and so on. The best riders are doing more tricks total, too. Definitely less emphasis on smooth flow. The scores come up in the same range... can't explain that. The Russian rider failed a quad whip (!), apparently in a previous competition he'd landed a quint whip (!!)

The women's event was at first owned by a very big run at the end of the first round by Hannah Roberts (USA). Lots of big powerful tricks. That set the score to beat for round 2. Charlotte Worthington (GB) put down a much smoother run with some more technical moves and beat her by a point. Hannah's second run started out just as powerful but she made a mistake on her second trick and she elected not to finish the run and accept silver.

Something similar played out in the men's round with Logan Martin (Australia) putting down the top score in the first round. No one could meet it in the second round, not even Martin himself, who was confirmed gold for the last run but rode anyhow, having a mistake about halfway through. He was pretty lucky. All the riders from 2-6 improved their scores for round 2. Veteran rider Daniel Dhers (Venezuela) came the closest for silver. For USA, Nick Bruce did not complete his first run, feeling a shoulder injury from earlier in the week, and was DNS for round 2. Justin Dowell just didn't bring it together. They finished 8-9.

The announcers were kind of useless. I feel like they should have been a little more on-it with names of tricks and how impressive they were, but instead we got a lot of "whooooa!" The venue tried for the party atmosphere with the usual loud music but the party just isn't there like it normally would be. It was funny to see all the extreme sports athletes with extreme sports drink sponsors drinking unbranded water at the end of their runs.

At this point, friends, I am going to tune out. This week is track, all week. There are a ton of events. Enjoy!

This has no announcer but it does show the whole men's event: https://sports.nhk.or.jp/olympic/hig...-b2b80b651985/

Ah, sorry, didn't realize that it didn't work for you folks. If you use the Tor browser and have it direct through Japan you may be able to view it.

Well, I've only caught highlights on YT, but both of the team pursuits are worth watching. In the women's, the Germans but the British over their knees and gave them a righteous spanking, nearly catching them at the end. In the men's the Danes put on a carefully paced, finely calibrated clinic to leave the Italians in the dust until Ganna put the team on his shoulders and put in a stupendous 750m pull for gold. The women averaged nearly 60km/h for 4 km, the men 68!

The rest of the events can be viewed here: https://en.sports.nhk.or.jp/olympic/sports/cycling/

As mentioned in a previous post, sounds like you need to use a location spoofing browser like Tor to use that site, with your location set to Japan in the browser settings.

On the left side of that page, if you click on Men's or Women's, a list of events opens up. Then click the one that interests you to go to a page with a full video of the event.

Another big crash out in the women's omnium scratch race. Seven riders down and they take out an official. And it was the second crash in the same heat as two riders had collided earlier. 9x DNF

I thought at first from the headline (and past problems this year) that the official caused it by walking out on track. Not so, he was downstream of it and got taken out on the apron by a crashing rider.

I sure did enjoy watching the women's Madison. It's like the team short track speed skating, which obviously took it's format from the Madison.
