Schwinn S5 and S6 Rim

Is there a real difference between a Schwinn S5 and S6 Rim?

Reason I'm asking is because the Schwinn Im working on has both S5 and S6 stamped rims.

thanx

Huge difference. S-5 = ISO 547, S-6 = ISO 597. Any chance the stamping is smudged on one of them?

You are confusing tire sizes with Schwinn rim markings. If both of your rims are 26", they will take S6 tires, 597 BSD. There was also an S6 27", normal tires for it.

No kidding? Schwinn used the same codes for tire sizes *and* rim types?

Thank you for the answer!

They are both 26" rims, I just wasn't sure about the marking s on the rims. They are not stamped good and I was barely able to read the stamps.

S5 rims are wider than the S6s and have a different shape. The diameter for a given wheeel size is the same. The S series is really about the shape of the cross section the rim than anything else. Imagine what you would see if you hack sawed through the rim. Roger

Those both look to be S6 597 which should be fine for your bike. You should be looking for 26inch 597BCD tires. These are often refered to as Schwinn 26'' or Schwinn S6 tires. There should be markings on the tire if you have them listing the tire type.

It's a 1966 coppertone Schwinn Racer.

And Thanx for helping me out on the tire sizes.

Wheels for a 1966 racer should be 26 x 1 3/8 nominally, but the Schwinn ISO 597 size. Tires are still made, but not as nice a variety as English size.

I know this is an old thread but i'm running into a problem with S6 tires on S5 stamped rims.
They are not fitting very well.
I've bought some new Kenda 26 tires for S6, and they also are not fitting very well on these S5 rims.
So it looks like i'm finding out that S5 rims take a different tire..

Getting even the proper sized tires to "seat" evenly on Schwinn "tubular steel" rims can be difficult to impossible, unless a bead lubricant is used.

I usually have to spray rubbing alcohol between the tire beads and rim walls just before inflation, so as not to have a serious "low spot" on the tire's rolling diameter, and even then it can take several tries, deflating fully each time.

This very tight fit of the tire bead around the inside shoulder diameter of the rim allowed Schwinn to use their standard rims on their tandem bikes, allowing much higher inflation pressures.
But it can also make it impossible to get a repaired tire seated evenly out on the road! And so you get to ride home on a thumping tire.
