My dad didn't know bikes and we didn't talk much but he was one of the only non-cyclists who never freaked out when he heard how much bikes and bike parts cost.
He worked tool and die and aircraft parts so he understood costs of things, as opposed to a guy I worked with who said there was "no way" the Tour de France bikes could cost more than $300.

My dad rode a black Rudge, which he would never have considered touching except to ride, and started taking me out on the streets of Manhattan on my little red Raleigh when I was about seven, which would have been in 1963. We stopped at red lights and took lanes when appropriate. We did not wear helmets.

LSS had an uncleating issue and went down at an intersection a couple of weeks ago on her first outdoor ride in years. She did not blame me and is ready to go out again.

First post-work, outdoor ride since October. As often happens for the first few of these rides, I underdressed. The temperature dropped from 59 degrees when I started out to 48 degrees when I got back to the car, a little over a hour later. Even the coldest garage rides, it warms up as I ride. Plus there's no wind on Zwift.

But as always, riding IRL >> riding in the garage. I'll be honest - I dawdled a bit and enjoyed the flowers and the greenery.

Got to the Mexican restaurant where we had reservations, and it was closed. Wife ended up having an Old Fashioned and a Pinot Noir with a Halibut/shrimp risotto dish at III Forks. All pain has been alleviated

Thank you. He would have been 84 this year (that's at least a 1-speed difference!). My love of bikes came from him. The 1977 Nishiki ONP I have was his daily commuter and weekend fun machine - he loved that bike. He was never a racer himself, but taught me about Le Tour, the cobbles of Roubaix, Eddy, Bernard, and we both enjoyed following the daily results of LeMond in July. He got to see me race MTBs, but left this world before he got to see me race and win on the road. Those two homemade chain whips are just a couple of his tools that I still regularly use.

I rode outside on Wednesday night while my daughter was at softball practice. Cold, dark, and alone is not a cocktail I enjoy. I should have gone home for a Zwift session.

That reminds me of a friend who worked at a bike shop in the late-90s who told me about arguing with an insurance adjuster who refused to believe that a bicycle could possibly cost $1000.

Today, you can buy a bicycle for nearly as much as my parents paid for their first house, which would be about the same as what I paid for my first new car in 1995.

Cherish the memories. My father died young, worked himself to death, smoked like a chimney, and died with a litany of health issues.

My first adult bike, 1975 Chiorda, had a 5 speed freewheel but I didn’t ride it much. In 1982, when I really did start riding seriously, I had a 6 speed.

I’ve been in a real funk lately. My wife and I overdid our riding a couple weeks ago and then the weather turned bad about the time that I could tell that I need a rest and I thought a few days off would make me feel better but it seemed to make things worse. So, basically, I had a week of tv, junk food snacking, and looking outside at cold, rainy, plain miserable weather. Tried to ride one day and absolutely hated it. Depression spiral.

Yesterday, my “old&slow” group was having a ride but the weather was still crap and I didn’t want to go but my wife forced me to. I have to admit that the slow 22+ mile urban ride helped a lot. Glad that I went.

March and April weather is the worst in my opinion; a cycle of a few warm beautiful days followed by horrendous weather from the crappiest stuff the Nature ***** can throw out.

For tomorrow’s visit to my folks it’s a tough call. My dad and I have been immunized but my mom and mrs datlas have not. I am going to suggest my mom stay inside for her safety but I think ok to have my dad come outside so I can give him a bday hug. At 87 I don’t know how many more times we will have the chance for that.

And my dad appeared to not understand inflation. He could never get over a cup of coffee costing more than 15 cents. And a a myriad of other similar things. The five cent loaf of bread. He was not a cyclist as an adult, though for a time, he carried a folder around in the car. He would have celebrated 98 next week.

I don’t know what’s going on with hotels but second day in a row I have had cleaning ladies try to enter my room before 8 am. Had the do not disturb sign on and it didn’t stop them. Wouldn’t be a huge issue except I am working nights this trip.
