The Motiv ad on the next-to-last page:
Motiv was a big-box brand that was half a step above Huffy but far below nearly anything at a LBS - but with a price point reflecting this.
It also brought back memories of 29 years ago buying a Motiv tandem at Price Club for $399 to ride with my new girlfriend of the time. Stamped steel components and a frame 2" too tall for me (and too short for her) with the lateral stiffness of overcooked pasta. But it was $399 when everything else with 2 wheels and 2 saddles was much more costly. Oh well - she dumped me not much later.
A year later, I'd met another young woman who seemed like a keeper, so we decided to get a non-Motiv tandem that would be a keeper as well. Still have 'em both.

I never really understood the popularity that emerged back then for white painted components on race bikes. It made them look like they were made of cheap plastic, instead of nice forged aluminum. Could Miami Vice have been a "fashion" influence that made white painted components commercially viable back then??

But at least it wasn't a thing in the 70s. Imagine avocado green calipers.
