This thread has better bike porn than we've had in a while.

One of my long-time favorites is the Viscount. And by the way, folks, the name is not pronounced as it's spelled. Look it up in a dictionary. It's "VYE count."

So I don't get a discount if I pronounce it Viscount?

off topic, but I never got why Ofmega paired that gorgeous Mistral crank with the hideous (my view) plastic coated pink derailleur. I found this one and put it on my Centurion; it looks like it was designed by the same hand as the Mistral crank, even a smilar finish treatment.

I've got a set of gray powdercoated Sampson cranks that I'm afraid to use after seeing lots of pics of broken ones. Very light and unique, excellent machining. Here are some silver ones:

You're right it dies make a visual difference. Though I have an '83 520 and a 620 from the same year as that 520, that's not mine. My Sakae SR is on my Alyeska. Yours seems to say Sakae CR. I have an AR and an AX as well. Sakae cranks are nice.

Both yours and mine are nicer than the mistral --- I think the crankarm flowing-in look takes away from the cool angularity of the backswept arms. The form of the crankarm in the Sakae is distinct. Good looking crankset.

And no can do on the trade!

Halfstep + Granny + DT shifters = Open Road Bliss.

Yours is nice, too though!

Sounds like we are on the same wavelength on that...

I totally agree, the Mistral cranks is a total mismatch to their resin Mistral RD..... The "Premier" RD is a much better match to the crank, especially with the nice scallop design on the RD arm that perfectly mimics the scallops on the crank arms.... So that's what I am pairing together on my Medici build in the pic....
BTW, I don't think the Mistral RD was not just resin coated aluminum, the whole derailleur IS mostly resin...

Chombi, that is one cool-looking build! Have you started a thread on that? And you're right, the Mistral RD was not coated as I mistakenly wrote, the pieces were almost all "high-density plastic." You'll find that Premier shifts like a dream.

Thanks!,
I chose to use the Mistral crank on the Hellenic Medici frame, as the nice sharp angles on the crankset, I think, kinda echoes the many more angles (than what's on a regular diamond frame) on the frame.
I'm sure it will shift much better than the plastic Ofmega Mistral RDs, just because of the Premier's more modern offset parallelogram design.
Unfortunately the build hasn't gone that much farther than what you see, except for me already finding what I think is the correct 3TTT bullhorn bar for it already (but I also do have a seatpost, saddle, stem and brake levers for it already). It's because of a big slowdown at our firm and reduced work hours for me = no bike build budgets for now. Lots of (expensive) things still to do on it, like having the frame maybe refinished by Ed Litton who is conveniently nearby at the East Bay. Hopefully things will turn around soon or I'll have to look for a new job soon.....
I do have a thread going about the build. Just do a search on "Medici Aerodynamic" and you should find it....
I'm really getting sick of this seemingly never ending recession and its negative effect on my C&V builds.....

The Shimano XTR... I have one to go with the rest of a nearly complete first year group.

Not mine... prices for these in NOS condition are rather high now.

I usually sell the NOS and really pretty stuff I find... my XTR cranks are in excellent user grade condition and the other bits are very nice and should look pretty nice once they all go on the frame I am building up.

It has taken a good while to collect it as it was expensive in the day and has only gotten harder to find... it has the same level of finish as the Dura Ace from the same era.
