Which model Scapin do I have?
Hi All, is there anywhere on the web that gives info that’s helpful in identifying what model and year vintage Scapin I might have? I’d post pics here but am a newbie and need 10 posts before I can post the pics I took. Thanks Andy

I don't know what model it is, but it's either going to have a broken stem, or you're going to have a broken face, if you don't drop that thing down.

The subject frame has the rear brake cable routed within the frame but based on the side mounted shift lever bosses and what appears to be round tubing, it's not the Airone model. This would push the frame into the late 1980s, at which time the models, at least in the USA, used model names based on the tube set and component group (i.e. Scapin SLX C-Record). The components appear to be a mix of eras, complicating identification beyond the tube set, which is most likely Columbus SLX. However. to verify, you'll need to remove the bottom bracket and check inside the ends of the seat tube, down tube and chain stays for the five helical ridges indicative of SLX. The frame is too small to be SPX, which typically used on 56cm+ sizes. These ridges are narrow (3.5mm) and not very tall (0.35mm), sometimes making them hard to see, so use a good light. or feel for them.

Thanks T-Mar for the awesome info. What does it mean if it doesn’t have those ridges? Can’t see them or feel them with the seat post out. Here is a pic. Thanks

The helical ridges are only in the bottom 15cm of the seat tube (see previously posted cross-sectional diagram). They aren't prominent enough to be seen by looking down the seat tube. You have to remove the bottom bracket and examine for them by looking/feeling through the bottom bracket shell.

Ahhh got it and you were clear about that and I missed it. Will check and report back if that’s ok? Thanks heaps for your help and late 80s was when I was amazed by the bikes of the time but couldn’t afford one. Totally perfect if that’s the vintage.

Hey T-Mar you were 100% on the money. I finally worked out how to take pics with my snake camera and sure enough helical ridges. Pic taken by feeding it down the seat post tube and looking at the bottom bracket.

Yes, that's definitely a Columbus SLX seat tube. At 53cm, the frame is too small to be the heavier gauge SPX version, unless it is a custom frame, but even that is hard to envision. I should also mention that I committed a typographical error in my earlier post. Most manufacturers moved from SLX to SPX around the 58cm frame size, not 56cm.

...the kid I bought it from in El Cerrito told me he brought it back from a vacation in Santa Barbara, where he bought it off the SB Craigslist. Then he never got around to riding it. This bicycle has lived its entire lifetime in a nicer neighbor hood than mine. But maybe I will ride it a little more. I hope.

Scapin 80s
Hello All from italy. I just crossed this thread while searching for some infos on old Scapin.
I purchased a Scapin frame from the 80s and am searching the correct model.
I sent a request to Fratelli Barco -- the frame builders who used to build frames for Scapin in the 80s-90s -- and they commented that my model should be the "Competition", the top of the catalogue in the mid 80s as it has internal cable routing.
It is like the red model of the pictures previously posted (with the 3 dots on the frame) but with internal cable routing. However, I couldn't find a similar model in the Scapin available catalogs of 1985 and 1983 (have a look to the registrostoricocicli web site: from the available catalogs the Competition didn't have internal cable, the 1985 Airone had internal cable but had a different attack for ****fters on the tube: Perhaps it is a Competition post 1985 but I can't locate catalogues).
