10 speed cassettes

Hi.
Currently, I have durace draileurs and a sram chain and a sram cassette and it works fine. I don't know if the cassette I have is even worn out but I have put close to 5K on it and I am replacing the chain anyway.

If I want to replace a 10 speed cassette, is it worth spending more $ to get a better quality one? I do have an extra tiagra 11-28 with low mileage but I am thinking its not the best option. Does it matter if I replace with a sram or shimano cassette? What about the other brands?

I don't think you'll get any more time and distance out of a higher tier cassette. You will get less weight. If you were buying most of the groupset, then you might see better shifting.

I doubt your cassette is worn with only 5K miles on it.

Agree completely with Iride01 in post #2. Any Shimano cassette I've used from Dura Ace down to Tiagra has shifted the same. In very general terms cassettes last as long as about 3 chains. Best is to measure your chain and replace when worn. Use your cassette until when a new chain starts skipping on cogs.

I assume it's how you define a "better" cassette. The more expensive ones (Shimano Dura Ace, SRAM Red) are the lightest cassettes, if weight is important. Otherwise the lower priced cassettes should work fine. Personally, I would stay with Shimano or SRAM. There are other brands available too, but I have no experience with those. A quick search at Amazon shows brands like Bibike and Bolany.

I've used both SRAM and Shimano cassettes with Shimano, KMC and SRAM chains, and all work well together.
