The Illinois Prairie Path runs through my town, and it is one of the original crushed limestone "rail trails" in the U.S., with 65 miles combined and connections to other trail systems. While it is certainly a MUP, many of the western parts of the trail are very sparse with walkers and joggers, as it can get a bit remote at times. Many people around here will actually refer to it as "the bike path", even though it is certainly used by a lot of walkers and joggers, particularly the busier portion from Wheaton to Maywood that runs through a lot of residential areas. Most pedestrians understand that you need to make room for bikes on this trail, as there are hundreds of cyclists on any given day.
But yeah, pedestrians here are no problem. I only ring the bell a couple-three times on the typical bike ride and only when it looks like they are completely unaware of my presence. A quick ring way in advance is all it takes.

We are probably neighbors... I like to do the "loop" Villa Park to County Farm Rd on either the Prairie Path and then come back on the Great Western Trail (or vice versa). The latter sees about 1/10th the traffic and is ideal if I feel like riding fast.

I have now found a route across the Fox River, down Randall Road, and to the western trail head of the Great Western Trail. And that part of the GWT goes all the way out to Sycamore. I can get an 80+ mile out and back, and the rural roads around Sycamore make for some good riding too.

Interesting.. so 5 miles = ~every 15 minutes or thereabouts, you encounter another person on the path. And you ding twice; and there's lots of room if judging by your picture.
