Many people around here will actually refer to it as "the bike path", even though it is certainly used by a lot of walkers and joggers, particularly the busier portion from Wheaton to Maywood that runs through a lot of residential areas. Most pedestrians understand that you need to make room for bikes on this trail, as there are hundreds of cyclists on any given day.
We are probably neighbors... I like to do the "loop" Villa Park to County Farm Rd on either the Prairie Path and then come back on the Great Western Trail (or vice versa). The latter sees about 1/10th the traffic and is ideal if I feel like riding fast.

But yeah, pedestrians here are no problem. I only ring the bell a couple-three times on the typical bike ride and only when it looks like they are completely unaware of my presence. A quick ring way in advance is all it takes.

I like that loop too, though my favorite part of the Prairie Path is the Elgin Branch from the Hwy 59 bridge to Steans Road. There are so few street crossings, and it is not so busy. I can do the loop you describe, add in an out and back to Steans Road, and that makes for a decently long ride without traffic.

I have now found a route across the Fox River, down Randall Road, and to the western trail head of the Great Western Trail. And that part of the GWT goes all the way out to Sycamore. I can get an 80+ mile out and back, and the rural roads around Sycamore make for some good riding too.

Interesting.. so 5 miles = ~every 15 minutes or thereabouts, you encounter another person on the path. And you ding twice; and there's lots of room if judging by your picture.

The problem isn't the bell. It is how it is deployed.

No, the problem is with the wackadoodle anti-bell arguments.

Suggesting that bells are always "deployed" badly makes no sense.

Any tool can be used badly. That doesn't really serve as an argument against the tool.

We don't allow people to just start up a new thread just because we closed the last one and they missed their chance to pile on. If we don't mind if you opening a new thread, we will tell you. Please don't open a new version of this thread. Sorry I didn't notice that it was opened and didn't shut it down sooner.
