I have a One Thousand, and a Miyata built Univega Gran Turismo. I love them both. I also have an 89 Team Miyata frame in my size, that may finally
get built up soon. It's only a bare frame, no fork or anything. I need a donor bike to put a nice group on it, and it needs painted pretty badly.. IF I could
find decals for it, I would be more inclined to paint it. I have soe mavic rims with Shimano hubs, that would work on it. I just need to commit, and build the thing.

I think I might be one of the founding members of The Cult. Spring of '77. Just moved to LA, and hadn't been on a bike since high school. Me and two friends rented bikes in Santa Monica and, after just 30 seconds, I knew I had to get a new bike. Found a cool bike shop near Burbank that sold Takara, Nishiki and Miyata. (Don't remember the name of the guy or shop, unfortunately. Real nice guy, though.) I ended up buying a pearl white Miyata. What a beautiful bike! Don't remember the model, but I think it was bottom of the line, or one model up. Nevertheless, that bike was a jewel, and quickly became my favorite possession. (Having just graduated college, it didn't have much to compete with.) Rode the Miyata for 6 years before selling it to a friend at work. He then rode it from NYC to Montreal.

Now, all these years later, I'm looking to rejoin the cult. If anyone learns of a 21"/23"/53cm 610 or 1000 in mint condition, let me know. That is, of course, if you're not looking for the same thing.

New Yorker, you can find what you want using Google Alerts. I have created some alerts for myself looking for my favorite bikes and components. They send me mail every day when there is new mention of them.

I've always though the 110 Team replica paint scheme was my idea. The two-tone Team was a very popular color scheme. I told our sales rep that if Miyata made an entry level bike that looked like the Team we'd sell every one we could get. Sure enough, a year later they made the 110 look like the Team.

Raleigh did that with the Record back in about 1980. I don't know how it affected sales. But I didn't care for that model much.

Have to agree about the paint scheme it does look great, and yes I have adjusted the seat. I wasn't planning on keeping it like that / the bike is far too small so it's hopefully going to a good new home this weekend

I have a question - I have an early 80's (82? 83?) Univega Viva Sport. I believe the frame was made by Miyata - it certainly looks identical to Miyata frames I've compared it to...

Does it count? If so, count me as a cult member. Mine is languishing right now due to it's needing a teardown/repaint/rebuild, but I still love it.

I'm officially back in! My Koga-Miyata traveler arrived today from across the pond and it's even more awesome than I'd hoped for. The attention to detail is astounding and I can't wait to get it built up. Look for photos in 3-4 weeks!

The early 80's Univegas were definitely made by Miyata, and yes, it absolutely counts. Lovely, isn't it?

Go look at the Atlantis. The Seat lug is identical to early 80's Miyatas and from all I have read Miyata was making their own lugs. I really wonder if that's where he is getting them built.

Not likely, because I recently read (here on bikeforums, so it must be true) that Japan doesn't mass produce bikes any more.

Last fall I was doing some work up in the hills behind Cupertino on the weekends. I rode my bike there (duh) and it was essentially 7 miles uphill. I got harrassed by another guy who was allegedly a cyclist also - though I never saw his bike. He was also apparently a weight weenie and a snob when it came to "antiques". He asked me a few times why I rode such an old bike. Most times I'd shrug and say "Because I like it." The last time he asked, I asked how come he didn't ride his bike. That was the last time I heard from him.

Well I don't own any Miyatas myself but I have procured a 610 and 912 for my father-in-law and best friend respectively. I guess this makes me a cult-recruiter or enabler? They both love the bikes, should I feel bad about unknowningly getting them involved in a cult?

I have a 1983 Pro on its way to me after a long distance CL purchase. Looks to be all original, but paint is in rough shape. Probably going to have the frame repainted. Will post more pics of Restoration when available. Here is one from the seller
