That depends on region... in Texas, pipes are in the uninsulated exterior walls of the house. It can be plenty cold in the morning much of the year.

Interesting. Our exterior walls are insulated. Most are in residential construction with possible exception of garages. Pipes do go through them though.

I think our house is a ****box... the "uninsulated" is a bit of an exaggeration, but I wonder, because you know the noise I complain about ripping through the house all the time? It's worst in the bathrooms, where it's always a dull roar of traffic. Bathrooms have plumbing in the exterior walls. It makes me wonder if there's anything in there.

I hate this place.

We have pipes in exterior walls, and have to be careful with them freezing in really cold weather.

The building codes require insulation in exterior walls, but that does not equate to sound deadening. Also, if you have single pane windows it will be less sound damping.

If you live in a volume built house (David Weekly, for example) the construction was likely done to the lowest quality standards.

Mrs John accidentally bought some one-ply paper a while back. This stuff is so flimsy, even folded, you can blow right through it when blowing your nose.

The crappy rental house we had before the one we're in now was quiet. There was little insulation, single pane windows, and air leaks throughout, but there were never parties nearby and never fireworks or loud music. I lived there for 16 years and never had trouble going to sleep because of noise. I hated to leave there.

Its not just the noise. The volume builders build them and move them as fast as they can. They are usually built to the minimum required building standards, cutting expense at every corner. It’s little wonder that most of those neighborhood look like crap within ten years.

One thing I could never understand is why do the volume built hoods always end up with a lot of cars parked outside and very few in the garage?

I don’t mean to pick on your home, but I would never buy a house built by the big national builders. That’s coming from a long time construction lawyer.

As for the cars, yeah, it drives me nuts. If I had my druthers I'd have every car that lives at a house and isn't parked in the garage towed. Especially when they park them across the sidewalk. That's a huge part of why we run on the road instead of the sidewalk...

Nobody here parks in the garage. Here, they serve the purpose that attics used to, or basements. Or family rooms. Oh, you'll occasionally find an old car in them. Or in my case, 10 bikes and a pain cave.

Some houses here don't have garages, some have a tiny garage. My rental has a big garage behind the house but it would be a giant pain to get my car back there.

The lots here are about 40' wide so there is room for one car plus the width of the driveway. Neighbor next door has 5 cars, next house has 6. Across the street has at least 6. Parking around here gets tough. If Mrs John goes out in her car someone will swoop on her spot sometimes.

There are no sidewalks in this neighborhood.

I’m referring to 3, 4, 5,000 sq. ft. house neighborhood with at least 2 and often 3 car garages. How much crap can you store in them?
