Varia radar camera RCT715 leaked

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm with you there. I have 12 myself plus 3 more that my wife and daughter ride. My son rides the same size frames, so that's kind of an excuse. All of them and the associated gear, etc except for the ladies bikes are stored at my place of business. It has a 2200sqft warehouse, so space is not a problem.

I have mine set to vibrate wherever there's a car behind me, can't miss it.
I use a watch also. It's a Polar and Polar has given up on cycling computers. Smart phone is in a jersey pocket. I don't really look at my data much except my cadence when I'm climbing. Bars are free of clutter. If I get a Varia, something will have to go on the bars to pair with it. I have to figure out what. Either the smart phone, a Lenzyne XL, or a Karoo 2. I want to stay out of the Garmin ecosystem if possible. Probably wait to see if Hammerhead brings another unit to the market. For some unknown reason, I've been toying with the idea lately of getting one of these and mounting it to my helmet as some type of HUD like display. I don't know what that will accomplish, but the idea won't go away.

Initial battery life info on the Cygolite Hot Rod 90:

Both units worked for around 2 hours 45 minutes in Zoom setting out of the box. Tomorrow I'll see how long they take to charge and how long they last after the charge.

I would go with the Karoo out of those choices. I've been very happy using a watch though, including with the Varia radar.

I'm a big fan of my RTL510. Battery life on the new radar camera is way too short for my longer days, and I read that it can't operate while charging.

I felt exactly the same way about sex, but it turns out I really don't miss it at all and my FTP really improved.

As for the radar, I found that I got out of the habit of flipping off drivers when they honked at me, because the radar removed the surprise element from the interaction.

The lights are sitting on my desk in strobe mode. I can see how long they will last and the recharge cycle will take.

My daughter passed her driving exam last week after a lengthy process. During the process, I had to switch her to one of our vehicles that doesn't have a backup camera. She was depending on it too much and not using proper safe driving procedures. Once we went to the other vehicle, she couldn't get out of the driveway without the camera. Many days of frustration ensued. Gradually, she got the hang of it.

That's what I worry about some with the radar.
The Varia gives you far more awareness of what is approaching you from behind than your "safe riding instincts" ever did. So there's no need to be afraid of it. All it does is greatly increase your situational awareness. How you actually react to that additional information doesn't really change. It's a bit like if you suddenly developed super-sensitive hearing. It would only enhance your safety instincts and that's really what the Varia does.

I can't say I'm bothered about action cam use, but I can't argue about the high price. I would only want to see footage from the camera if something crashed into me (or perhaps if there was a ufo tailing me) and so the card size wouldn't be an issue. The price however makes it a hard sell upgrade from my current Varia. But if I was starting afresh then I would just suck it up.

Sex is a misdemeanor. Kind of hard to give up, though.

It would be really cool if this thing sent video to the head unit when the radar activates.

Without that, who cares? $400 for a bad action cam that only records problems?

It does indicate approaching vehicles on the head unit. That's all I need to check my mirror to see if the vehicle is moving over to safely pass.
As I stated in an earlier post, the "action" you are missing is basically hours of seeing the road behind you. It's pretty boring, really. However, in the event of a close pass, or worse yet, being struck by a driver, that video footage will prove invaluable.

Yes, I understood that. It doesn't send video to the head unit and it only records bad things.

For $450 you could get a rear rack and mount one of these babies on it! Heck, it's so small you could mount it on a helmet. If you had an incident, you could launch it in pursuit of the perp. Win win.

I just saw that the RTL515 radar & taillight is on sale for $150. If you don't want the evidence camera, this is a much better buy. 🙂

It was the first hypothesis I tested, and it was refuted (can't use the ANNIV22 code).
