There is an import fact about these bikes we all forget when bashing them. Millions of Americans have ridden billions of miles on these bikes to get to work through extreme heat, bitter cold and all kinds of precipitation.

Absolutely BG. They were iconic in the sheer number that went out the door from Sears, KMart, M. Ward, Kresges (sp), etc...and those folks found a lifestyle of gentle fitness.
They did not have to be so bad at that price...though I am guessing no rust bombs or accidents would bend those frames...
They were pre-bent.
They were also put on the road in such sheer numbers that they were out of alignment (minor), Underwelded (major), not checked for safety with the brakes, cranks, handlebars, stem...
Good news was that no one could move that fast to cause too much damage.

No reason to wax nostalgic about those bikes. For most owners, one or two rides was enough to convince them that cycling was a bad idea. There are probably landfills and scrapyards filled with these POCs. “Murray: Turning Americans Away from Cycling for Over 50 Years!”

I remember the days filled with servicing bikes like this one after another all day long. Got good at it as they all had the same flaw of cheapo components. Take a slip-joint pliers to align the rear derailleur, a Park tool to bend a brake arm, etc. Crude, but effective ways to get them to function better than when they arrived. That was the beauty of these things. No matter what you did to it, regardless of the lack of precision, it turned out better than when it came in.

Not to mention that they had to put up with all of this in the face of John Forester encouraging cities to tear up their existing (or planned) safe cycling facilities in favor of vehicular cycling.

Nothing could fix the flexy frame, but an upright bar and coasterbrake can turn these pieces of crap into a fairly reliable neighborhood runabout. I sometimes replaced the headset nut or part of the headset though, because the stamped stuff on these bikes are almost as bad as nylon headsets.

This is one of those bike that don't make you mad when converted into a fixie. With all new parts it might even make a good beater.
