Bike ID? Only one Terrible Picture

Advertised as "American hi quality 10 speed". Any idea what it is?

half fork crown cap

steel stem and bar

steel rims

looks very department store

shift levers are likely Yoshi

+10 Value of bag exceeds the bike. Chrome slip on fork cap is typical of junky bikes.

Back in the day, some of the junkiest bikes were made in the USA: Huffy, Murray, Columbia.

I don't see high quality there, much less "hi" quality. Goodbye.

"American-made, high-quality bike bag for sale. You will have to empty the junk 10-speed inside it yourself."

Jokes aside, the tubing miter to the headtube has that Columbia/Murray look to it - which lines up with the seller's US-made claim. If so, I think it might be one of these utter piles of trash:

Don't get me started on the junk that Murray, et. al. have passed off as bicycles all the way into the 1990's.

"American made" my eye. More like "Made for American cheapskates."

There is an import fact about these bikes we all forget when bashing them. Millions of Americans have ridden billions of miles on these bikes to get to work through extreme heat, bitter cold and all kinds of precipitation.

Absolutely BG. They were iconic in the sheer number that went out the door from Sears, KMart, M. Ward, Kresges (sp), etc...and those folks found a lifestyle of gentle fitness.

They did not have to be so bad at that price...though I am guessing no rust bombs or accidents would bend those frames...

They were pre-bent.

They were also put on the road in such sheer numbers that they were out of alignment (minor), Underwelded (major), not checked for safety with the brakes, cranks, handlebars, stem...

Good news was that no one could move that fast to cause too much damage.

No reason to wax nostalgic about those bikes. For most owners, one or two rides was enough to convince them that cycling was a bad idea. There are probably landfills and scrapyards filled with these POCs. “Murray: Turning Americans Away from Cycling for Over 50 Years!”

I remember the days filled with servicing bikes like this one after another all day long. Got good at it as they all had the same flaw of cheapo components. Take a slip-joint pliers to align the rear derailleur, a Park tool to bend a brake arm, etc. Crude, but effective ways to get them to function better than when they arrived. That was the beauty of these things. No matter what you did to it, regardless of the lack of precision, it turned out better than when it came in.

There's an additional fact about these bikes we also forget: These terrible bikes also gave millions of Americans a skewed idea of the reliability, functionality, and overall comfort of a bicycle, and probably made them want a car for commuting instead, despite the fuel crisis.

Not to mention that they had to put up with all of this in the face of John Forester encouraging cities to tear up their existing (or planned) safe cycling facilities in favor of vehicular cycling.

I've had a few come my way to flip. My favorite fix is to throw a coasterbrake in the rear wheel. It simultaneously fixed the cheap braking system and the cheap shifting system. North Road handlebars too if I had them; more commonly some risers because that's what I usually had in the spares.

Nothing could fix the flexy frame, but an upright bar and coasterbrake can turn these pieces of crap into a fairly reliable neighborhood runabout. I sometimes replaced the headset nut or part of the headset though, because the stamped stuff on these bikes are almost as bad as nylon headsets.

One could also say they were the gateway drug to finer, multi-speed bikes for many people. They still sucked, tho

The photo should really match the subject bicycle in terms of quality, and I think the seller has really done this one justice. Bravo!

Nope, I hadn't. While those also look like torture devices, they don't make the other Murray bars look any less uncomfortable

Agreed on both points, after 1-year of nursing a Sears/Puch gas pipe framed BSO over more miles than I care to estimate, the Bottecchia my parents leg me make $10.00 per week payments on was heaven on wheels.

Still have not even tried to find an antidote for the illness😁

Yup. Mine happened to be Huffy. Then my bud who owned a chrome Paramount educated me. A Motobécane came next followed shortly by the Lejeune I still own. Along with about 30 others. LOL

This is one of those bike that don't make you mad when converted into a fixie. With all new parts it might even make a good beater.
