Carbon Wheel Set on Hybrid?

I have the upgrade itch! Thinking of purchasing carbon fiber wheel set for a 2014 Giant Escape RX Composite. The wheel set will actually cost almost as much as the bike! 30mm wheels....Any opinions?

My wife and I had Giant Escape RX Composites as well https://www.bikeforums.net/hybrid-bi...e-owner-s.html . Then moved on to a couple of FastRoad CoMaxs. Last fall I did a complete upgrade on the FastRoads, drive train, wheel set etc. https://www.bikeforums.net/fifty-plu...comax-1-s.html While I didn't upgrade to carbon I did purchase a very well reviewed set for both bikes. I can tell you it was $$ well spent. The Giant wheels were like boat anchors compared to the new set. Also when with tubeless. Then we purchased a couple of new Canyon RoadLite CF 9.0 LTDs. These came with Reynolds AR1 carbon wheels from the factory. Both are they nice.. Do I wish I had purchased them instead of the set I did for the FastRoads. No. But hey it's your $$. I can say a new wheel set will make your bike feel like a new one.

It's your bike. Do what you want. The wheels aren't going to make your hybrid as fast or as aero as a road bike, but if you like them and can afford them, enjoy!

You do you, of course, but "I pass roadies all the time" is a meaningless metric that speaks more to the calibre of riders in your area.

On a local climb I get passed by WorldTour pros out training, and they drop me like a sack of potatoes, no matter which of my bikes I happen to be on.

I recently built a few sets of wheels and strongly considered carbon rims for my last set. I went with DTSwiss XR361s. For what they weigh going carbon wasn't a significant difference. Spending a few hundred more for Chinese carbon would save me ~30g per rim. Spending many times that on a domestic product might save a few more grams. Definitely past the point of diminishing returns. If you're racing you gotta do what you gotta do. For a casual rider looking for a cool set of rims they're awesome for the price.

Rotating weight makes a big difference... whether is worth the cost is another. Common statement in the automotive and motorcycle worlds is 1 lb saving at the wheel equals 2 lbs in the chassis.

Carbon wheels are at least $1k+ and saving around 500-700g for the set vs. stock I think is a fair assesment.

If you're willing to drop that kind of money for upgrades, I would look at other components first: Innerbarends, grips, Shimano105 shifters/group set, cleats, etc. Or put that money towards another bike.

You'll be faster finding clever ways to get more aero on a hybrid vs changing to lighter wheels.
