What's the most common reason front shifter won't grab 2nd gear?

I tried to clean it per many youtube suggestions to no avail. I don't think it has to do with the "pawls" not catching.

Maybe I didn't clean it enough? I used vinegar. Thought I'd flush it out then lube it after determining crud in there was causing problems. I really don't know but it doesn't feel like a dirt issue.

Incorrect adjustment is likely the most common reason. Then come gummed up and broken.

Vinegar isn't a good cleaner for this. Try some solvent of some type. WD-40 works good and most people have some on hand. Spray it in there real well and keep trying to work it through the gears a bunch of times. Try this and report back. Here's juntjoo's video.

You say in your video it won't grab the second position. However we watched you shift from the 1st position to the second. Also not convinced I saw you shift each direction fully+1 or 2 extra pulls while keeping tension on the cable.

I can only assume this is a 3x shifter and you have a 3x crank on the front of your bike. However I can imagine that some shifter manufacturer might use a 3x indicator for a 2x shifter if you aren't going to see the 3 on the indicator during use.

So what other components do you have that the shifter is connecting too?

Vinegar is acetic acid. Grease is an organic. You need an organic solvent, and the WD-40 suggestion is the most common way to clean and de-gunk shifters.

Yes, my mistake. I can use 1-2 on the shifter, not 3

So what are you saying? They might have made it for 2 only but for cheaper manufacturing just made it look like the 3 shifter?

I'm saying that if that shifter is made in both a 2x version and a 3x version, then they might use the same indicator dial. You wouldn't know if the cover wasn't removed. Nothing bad or good about the shifter. Just the company saving cost of having to inventory to different items when one works for both.

If your bike is only 2x, then you only need one click. 3x and you get two clicks.
