Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday ... we didn't do much. It wasn't a brilliant weekend for weather and I wanted to rest. But Rowan did do quite a bit of yard work.

Sunday -- I ran the local Fun Run ... only 5 km but it was my fastest 5 km.

Temp started at about 10C and cooled off to about 8C with a "feels like" temp around 3C.

Fun Run Results:
Total Distance: 5.25km
Time: 36:11
Overall Place: 160/278
Gender Place: 66/153
Division Place: 8/20 ... division is age group + gender.

And I wasn't in the oldest age group, there were people in the 70-79 age group running/walking as well.

It rained, fairly heavily at times, while I was waiting to start, so a bunch of us were huddled in the building where they handed out the numbers. Then the sun came out and I jogged down to the start. The sun stayed out throughout the run and I discovered I was actually overdressed. Even though it was quite chilly, running + sunshine makes me very warm.

The last bit of the run was along a beach, on the sand, so that slowed me down a little bit ... but it was all right. And I was looking up along the edge to see Rowan, and there he was!

Saturday - A fairly fast 50.1 miles on my favorite bike. The Giordana XL Super. Cool and calm for around the first 30 miles with clear blue skies. I ran into a "convoy" of vintage tractors early on as they headed by in the opposite direction. I kicked up the pace and raced for about four miles to get to an adjoining intersection about a mile ahead of their path hoping to catch them again. I beat them pretty easily and was able to grab shots of each tractor as it went by. Pretty cool for the ol farm boy who's never really left the farm I guess. Here's some pics of some of them.

I spent many days on one of these old Fords growing up on our horse farm.

Five of us rode 31 mi. @ 15 mph w/1850 ft. of elevation. Not out to break records and often into some serious headwinds. So, 15 mph was pretty surprising. All data taken from my Garmin Edge which is different than Strava data. Had some nice conversations. Including one about one of the guys riding the Dragon on his Triumph Thunderbird and me having ridden it on my Ducati Supersport. It was really a beautiful day.

Outstanding

Yesterday's ride was unexpectedly better than I had hoped for. Not recuperated from Thursday's 127 miles I simply wanted to hang on for 10/15 miles of the 39 mile LBS ride. Instead I managed to hang in and even took some pulls along with 2 efforts needed to close gaps when riders in front of me slowed and the others pulled away. Gap closing efforts required 28mph to bridge the gap after which both times I felt like puking. Was pleased with my efforts and didn't mind the feeling . LBS ride completed I did some extra before arriving back home for a total of 73 miles.

Got an invite from some folks that I know only slightly, so a good opportunity.

The route went deep into the neighboring county, territory that I usually only see after driving to rides with the club there.

Nice day, but I lost steam the last quarter- the price for practically no miles last week, some too hard efforts in the middle of the ride, and a bit of heat.

101 miles, 6,700'

Yesterday was a short, early-ish ride with a couple of friends, joined by another for the last 10 of about 30 miles. Saw a little more wildlife than usual, including the COOLEST EVER.
On the way back, heading up the hill at State Line and just a few yards before the top there was a little groundhog, within arms reach of the shoulder, sitting up, munching away at something while watching all the cyclists crest the hill. He was like a little spectator with popcorn, I half expected him to have a cowbell! We had a bit of a tailwind for the last part, and hammered a couple of segments, but nothing to write home about as it turned out, since we'd had similar conditions on more spirited rides in the past. What achievements were earned were on segments I'd only covered once or twice before.

Same thing today with regard to achievements, but instead of wildlife, it was an urban adventure. I drove to a friends place in Brooklyn and got a light breakfast before tooling around a little bit and heading over the Manhattan Bridge. Then it was around an up the west side greenway before heading over to Central Park. By that time it had gotten quite crowded, and we did just one loop. Again, hammered a couple of segments, but having to watch for lights, pedestrians, horse carriages, etc., plus the lack of a peloton meant that times were way shy of my best. I did work hard enough to get in the top 2-3% for the day, though, so it was fun. Riding downtown after that wasn't bad at all - traffic was very light down 5th and Broadway, and through the LES before we crossed back over on the Williamsburg Bridge and made our way back to Prospect Heights. Got a snack, mounted tires on my friend's new wheels, more snack, watched MotoGP, then got a late lunch. Although today's ride was another short one, just 33 miles and 1,000' (half the elevation of yesterday's ride), it was great fun.

Just noticed that today was the anniversary of my longest, climbing-est ride. I need another ride like that soon - maybe next weekend - and know a couple of other guys who are up for the same. We'll see....

Great weather for riding in western Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota. Perhaps I should say PURR-fect?

Friday: Finally got on the road bike after five whole days without a road ride (though I did some short commutes throughout the week.) It was breezy, and I got in a short loop with a partial tailwind on the way home. 25.3 miles, 1,083'.

Saturday: Started out later than I would have liked, which meant shortening my original plans - it's now dark at 7PM. Still a great ride, with three climbs and a brief ride along the river next to the Great River Bluffs State Park. 45.6 miles, 2,543'.

Sunday: I finally made it to a group ride for the first time in several weeks. 35 mile ride (in territory I never ride solo) plus to/from the ride = 55.1 miles, 2,014'.

Saturday I did a 50 mile out and back to a little mountain reservoir and upon arriving back in town I finally got up the nerve to take the Propel down a local rail trail. I've been wanting to give it a shot for a while because it opens up a lot of new possibilities. The wheel/tire combo wasn't ideal, but it did fantastic for the 6 mile test. I am looking at a second wheelset to use for this in the future.

Sat: 58mi Rode my 2nd Cycle for Life for Cystic Fibrosis. First as a member of the Race CF team. So much fun and such a good route this year. Lots of strong folks pulled the front at 22avg till i parachuted off the back at 30mi mark and went back some other friends who had been dropped. Rode the rest of the way with them. Had a tailwind on the way out and head/cross on the way back that was a bit rough.

Sun: 12mi mountain bike semi recovery ride. was still hard cuz the legs were tired but felt really good on the mtn bike. Rode some tough for me sections I hadn't been this season that i couldn't ride last year. legs still hurt haha

After 10 inches of rain Fri.night/Sat/Sun morning at my house, I managed to get out for a slow 17 mile ride Sunday evening. I should have ridden something with more tire tread since several of the roads were covered in gravel, dirt, and debris by the flash floods.

First off...I hate all you people who get to enjoy Fall weather. This last couple of weeks have been hotter than even the peak summer months. We are 5 - 10 degrees above normal. It sucks. Anyways. Saturday rode to the Upper Tampa Bay trail. Had not been there in a while and it still has it's share of annoying fellow cyclist. Sunday I did a reverse route around Thonotossasa lake. Unfortunately, had a car intentionally pass within a couple of inches from my handle bar as the passenger yelled at me. Also, paid the price for not riding the past week. My legs got really sore after 25 miles on Sunday.
