Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had a long hard ride yesterday and despite an early start, the last hour was VERY hot. I had to drive to NJ for some family obligations after the ride, and during the drive my legs would periodically have cramps/spasms. It almost made me wish the Saturn had an automatic transmission or at least cruise control.

Ok. Is it weird that I'm not getting any codes? Other than fuel trims being wonky everything else looks correct

Anywho, took it out this morning, it was a nice ride and did a different route than usual. I avoided rough roads and bumps but when I got back to the house it still slipped about 3mm. I’ll need to pick up some carbon paste in the next week if I can. I’m thinking about asking my LBS to torque the clamp for me. I’m not convinced my torque wrench is accurate. Lily’s new AL domane is slipping as well.
Carbon paste is the answer. It'll fix your slipping issues.
As always don't eat the paste.

Kudos! You need more selenium in your water bottle.

Our ride was long and hot, too. Got some sunburn as well.

Got home and the assassin reminded "to mow the lawns and find your own supper because I ain't cooking."

Amazingly, no cramping today but it was relatively flat.

Maybe. First 2 bottles had GU Roctane but the next 4 were just water. I was adequately hydrated but barely. My body acclimates to heat reasonably well but this was my first hard ride this year in hot weather, so I did feel it.

I went through 10 bottles on Friday. That was with the first 50 being mostly in the shade. It’s been super hot lately.

The humidity changes everything. I can do heat just fine, but throw in humidity and my body suffers. That said, time to ride.

When I had the S-10 I had to tilt the steering wheel up to get my foot on the clutch. My knee was just past the steering wheel at the top of the clutch pedal position. This made for some ridiculous cramping situations driving home from hot rides. The cramps on the inside of the thigh are the worst. I shifted without the clutch when I could and tried to time traffic lights so I wouldn't have to stop.
If I've been doing a lot of climbing I usually don't cramp. It's the worst on a hot climbing ride when I haven't been climbing a lot.

Toasted turkey and cheese followed by an apple. No idea what the woman did because she was already zonked out in the recliner by the time I got done mowing.

I rebuilt my first carburetor in 1971, a simple Ford 4bbl. In 1990 or so my friend and I would joke about how we could do a Quadra-Jet blindfolded. We never did, but we could have. The last GM cars with carbs were around then and trucks were all injection in 1987. At the dealer we stopped accepting them for repair around 2000. I would do small repairs to carbs but no more rebuilds. Too much trouble and people had unrealistic expectations, (largely due to service writers lies).

A different time from diagnosing electric cars and cars with 30 on-board computers all chatting with each other.

I estimate conservatively I serviced 30,000 cars in my last 20 years on the job. Could have been closer to 40k.

Great ride. I fought the wind the whole way out, but by the turnaround we had resolved our differences and cooperated on the way back. I jumped 40 places, since my ride on Friday, on the segment that I alone ride.

Pre- is real.

Good luck trying to catch up if you're riding on a truly hot day (not 85F).
