Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kudos. My Garmin 1030 decided on the last two rides that it won't talk to my iPhone anymore. This seems to happen every few weeks. Not a big deal since my 1030 uploads as soon as I pull up in the driveway via WIFI. Still, it's the random crap from Garmin devices that pisses one off.

Good luck on the dr. appt. I see my family doc on Wednesday and can't wait.

sounds like both devices have problems. I keep flip flopping back and forth on which one to get.

After a power meter of course.

Is there anyone to stop you from bringing it to the office?

Yes. Security at the front desk. We have to key in and out every time we enter/leave the building. You can apparently bring folding scooters in (saw someone do it a couple of weeks ago) but not full sized bikes. It's only 1.75 miles from home to office, but it's very humid out.

C'mon counselor, tell those hourly wage security workers just who you are and that you can have their job discontinued. Time to flex!

If I hadn't been dropped, I probably would have finished at about a 19mph average.

There were two hills that were particularly brutal, one called Juniper Swamp Road and the other called Patterson Hill Road. Juniper swamp got to about twenty one percent on sand / gravel / dirt with an average of 13.8 for the steep part of the climb. It was really hard to keep traction while standing to climb, but I made it up when most others around got up and walked. Patterson Hill got to 45% YES 45! and I was climbing at about 1MPH, spun out in the dirt and had to bail off of the bike. Was able to get back on and finish the climb. On a dirt downhill following, there was a semi surprising left hand turn I hit going too fast, skidded out and ended up off the road but upright. Most fun was a long downhill dirt stretch in a group of people where I hit 48.

This ride was about 10x as hard as the century I did last month with 3100 feet of climbing. The rough dirt roads beat me up, my neck was sore, my stomach was killing me (I had a gas bubble stuck) and it was extremely hot. It was also incredibly fun and I can't wait until next year. I finished in the top third overall and 17th in the 41-49 group. Can't complain.

Sounds very familiar!
Was there support on the course, or how did you get water?

There were 3 feed zones on the course where they had food and water.

I'm sitting at the desk, as one should. A more comfortable chair would be nice, but otherwise it's good.
