Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We love animation in my family. We used to watch the Tex Avery Show and the Chuck Jones show on Cartoon Network, when The Boys were younger, plus a number of other, newer animation stuff. The Younger Boy managed to get Maurice LaMarche's* autograph at an Anime convention in Sacramento and we all were really impressed!

* (The Brain on "Pinky and The Brain"; Kif on 'Futurama", plus a lot of other characters)

No, the decision was made to use those funds plus some funds from the sale of a car to pay off the mortgage. Probably a wise financial move.

I did get a new set of golf clubs that cost as much as a nice bike. I used to play a lot, and am jumping back into it now that the "yacht" is gone. More and more of my clients and referral network are playing so it seems like a good business move.

After the last climb, there's a flat section before the final downhill. When I hit the top section there was a guy on a newish Pinarello, not going really fast, not as fast as I was, anyway. I passed him and less than 5 seconds later he passes me, I guess having decided he wasn't gonna be shown up by a 63 year old guy on a 40 year old bike.

But he'd jumped from too close, so I had no problem spinning up to catch him. I didn't ride his wheel, but stayed at least 2 bike lengths behind and off to the side, but it was so windy and we were going about 25-30 mph, so even at that distance I probably had some benefit. With 100 yards to go I spun the 52x13 for all it was worth and flew by him. You might say I droped the hamer. After I passed the sign I use for demarcation, I sat up, let him pass and then did a U-turn to get back to the car. He didn't look or wave or acknowledge me in any way.

Anyway, it's probable he wasn't racing me, but the instantaneous response to my passing him the first time just made me want to show that 63 year old legs can go fast, too. And what the hell, it was fun.
FTFY - it wasn't the bike.

The financial wisdom depends on your interest and pay-down rates and what you think the opportunity cost of not investing the money elsewhere is, doesn't it?

You do make golf sound like a sound investment, though.

Or maybe she's worried her husband is an idiot because for what he paid for the Peloton he could have picked up direct drive Smart Trainer and a bike to go with it so she could use Erg Mode for training instead of a stupid knob to change the resistance?

I don't want to mow tonight but as soon as it dries out, I've got to do it. For the record, it is one contiguous lawn except the two little strips next to the curb.

That is true re the mortgage. But, we’re in really good shape for retirement, and the attraction of paying it off comes in the form of reducing our monthly nut and letting me work less before retirement. Getting rid of the payment, and thus giving me the ability to take three or four weeks off at a time is attractive. We tend to live off current income, and never touch savings, so reducing overhead means I can reduce income if I want to.

No absolute right answer no matter how you look at it.

I think the worried look comes from finding out that VV wants to hop on her tail.

How my bike sees me especially on the next day when I miss a planned ride.

She might have a thing for a beautifully-cut lawn.

Speaking of which, tough afternoon.

I didn't properly pre-hydrate, made worse by the fact that I had a buffet lunch.

Oof. I stopped for water three times--should be two, at the most.

Glad no one was around to see the drink of shame.
