Interesting article in today's NYTimes about how NYC is in the process of re-timing city traffic lights to favor cyclists over cars. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/23/n...sultPosition=1

Don't you have to eat that stuff like candy in order for it to start messing with you? Rare, but I'll take 800mg of ibuprofin at the end of a particularly hard week, which helps with the restless legs I get, at times. Heck, I might take 800 in a two or week week period, total. It's likely my guts would have likely been taken down by the not over the counter stuff, or the legally bought, most horrible drug known to man garbage that I can buy in any liquor store or supermarket.

Real geeks don't like it after workouts because of a largely theoretical possibility of suppressing the inflammatory mechanisms involved in the muscle response to exercise, but I don't know anyone like that.
Incidentally, if you are getting relief from restless legs with ibuprofen, you are a lucky man. That disease is looking more and more like a genetic disorder of iron metabolism and there are a few people out there diagnosing and treating it intelligently.

One thing that struck me from hanging out with a good deal of younger folks last weekend is how "old" I am. My ability to engage in quick-witted banter seems to have died with age.

Yes. Anyone who needs it should just be aware that it's got some risks, but it's very effective and certainly the first thing I reach for for any significant pain.

I'm lucky in the fact that I don't suffer from the true restless leg syndrome. The Mother in Law does, and Mrs. LAJ does suffer some from it, but seems to have subsided a bit. Mine is just the demons screaming from 3 days of squats intertwined with 5 days of hard bike.

I have never really been one to mingle per se. On Saturday I was hanging out at the fire pits with some of the people who were in my riding group during an overnight tour. They looked to be in their 20s and 30s. Lots of witty, alcohol-induced banter that I couldn't keep up with. When I was their age I would have killed it like I did when I crossed the country with 12 other people at age 34.
Sad.

Oh no, you can't hang with them, they're on a different planet, especially in their 20s and 30s and childless. That all changes for them once they have the responsibility of children, and then the gap narrows.

The "kid thing" must be why I can't relate to old people.

I don't have any kids (that I know of). That should give me some young people credit.

Have I ever mentioned I am a first class introvert. Mingling, to me, means answering the hotel room door to let the room service waiter in.

My kid is grown, so that re-widens the gap.

I like banter and smalltalk much more than the kind of "conversation" where people simply take turns making speeches on some general theme or, worse yet, go on and on and on. At least with smalltalk and banter the statements tend to be responsive something the other person said, so there's a little listening involved.
I have many fears connected to ocean racing, including storms at sea and submerged shipping containers, but my worst fear is a midnight-0400 watch with some guy—and it's always a guy—who just won't STFU about something.

I have an older patient (late 70‘s) and he is bored. I told him to check out the local senior center. His reply? “That’s for OLD people!”

+100 Last cruise I was on was a geriatric cruise, apparently . . . 90% old people but they didn’t tell me. Frikkin stick in the muds were no fun at all. For example there was an onboard Halloween party and the old bastids sat around watching as the same 5 couples danced all night. Crutches and wheelchairs everywhere and every day. A few old people, of course, that’s normal, but a whole ship full? Worst cruise ever.
