If I had a hill near me that was a 10% grade and 0.2 miles long, I'd go back down it and up again . . . and again . . . and again . . . and repeat as long as possible. Great HIIT workout! And after the HIIT workout you can skip the soccer field lunges and wind sprints.
This is a great point.
If I ever bike more seriously, and gain stamina, I will do this.
For now, that hill exhausted me and I had to coast for a bit.

So if you had a hill, you'd hammer in the morning, you'd hammer in the evening, all over that hill.

When you have a hammer, everything looks like a hill.

coasting with no pedalling at all
or
very light pedal for continuity (Not really propulsion)
Most of my rides are “zone 2” so i try to keep my heart rate in “zone 2” the whole ride: steady speed on the flats, faster down hills, and significantly slower going up. there’s really no recovery needed, imo. It’s quite literally a recovery ride.

Once a week or so, i put in a “zone 4” ride. More or less, ”zone 4” is more strenuous and fatiguing whether going up or down or flat. The goal is simply to keep the HR in “zone 4”.

i almost never coast regardless of the kind of ride (zone 2 or zone 4). That is, i only coast when i’m out of gears (i.e spun out) going down a very significant hill.

I'm a committed beer drinker, so I have the beer in my jersey pocket, and crack it open while coasting down the other side.
