This seems to be the case. The angle isn't huge either way.

Is it possible that my chainstays are just an awkward length for me to size a chain to?

No.Look at post #9.
What's difficult about that? Chain stay length is moot with that method.
I don't think the extra length you had would hurt as long as the chain didn't have a "bad" sag on small:small. That's a combination you shouldn't be using anyway since you are severely cross chaining.

I normally don't try to judge tooth wear on chain rings from pictures, but I think yours do look pretty stubby.
Go to an LBS and look at a few other NEW cranks w/ 11 speed to get a comparison to yours.

My point was that when my chain is able to shift into big big I seem to have considerably more slack than your example photo.

Yeah I'll try and take a look. If the chainring is knackered this might be the excuse I need to go 1x.

Derailleur adjustment yielded no joy. Sad to say I think this thing is dead.

in my opinion the symptom of a worn chain ring would be the chain skipping/jumping on it, not dropping off of it

GamblerGORD53 Really? I am not seeing the shark toothiness that I expect to see when a chain ring needs replacing. I say/ask this not as a smart-butt comment. More because I want learn how to properly gague when a chain ring needs replacing...I say as I eye up my own chain ring. Thank you.
