Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I joined the steel club yesterday when I bought a 2001 Bianchi Veloce. It's not as light and fast as my Felt 65, but it certainly has a smoother ride. Campagnolo drive feels a little more "mechanical" than Shimano 105, but it's built solid for the years. I'm glad I didn't compromise for the less expensive aluminum Trek; I'll be happily riding the Veloce for a long time.

Ira Ryan custom fixed gear. Not made for me, but I'm growing very find of it. He's building me a road bike, but it's not here yet.

Deda tubing, old-school DA hubs and campy record crankset. I've already switched to a silver Deda stem and bars.

My new custom rig. My club's training room is in the basement of my teammate's business, which happens to be a photo studio. In retrospect I should have taken the picture from the other side. I think it's sexy from any angle though.

Starting to see more Elephants at the races, especially cross. When it comes time to retire my steel Specialized I will look very closely at an Elephant road bike, in SRV colors of course!

What's the total weight?

Total weight was 18 with pedals, and I have a 35-inch inseam so it's a fairly large frame. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I haven't ridden it yet though because of the whether (I just picked it up last night). The price was better than I expected. I thought about getting yellow decals so it would match better with with my Baddlands kit. He didn't have any on hand, and I didn't want to wait for him to order any.

Here is my gunnar sport that I've posted here. Crank will be changed out when I find the appropriate campy compact.

In its latest glory:

My girlfriend's RB-2, which has been torn down since I got her something different that fits her a bit better.

Very boring pic, but this is my first build. Frame is 1995 Bianchi Campione d'Italia (lugged steel). Components are SRAM (Rival, Force and Red). The Quarq will swap between this and my Cervelo. There is absolutely nothing original or even from the period for parts, but that's how I planned it. I just wanted a modern bike with a sweeeeeeeeeet ride...and I got it!

This is a dumb question, but do aluminum frame bikes count? Or is this mostly a vintage deal?

Also, why dont competitive cyclists train with steel bikes? Adding weight is something many other sports use in training, why not cyclists?

Sure would love to know what it is so I could dig up some decals for it.

this is a very pretty bike but man, that forks has got to go. its probably bonking up the original intent of that frame. more rake and it would probably track better straight. looks sweet though.

Cyclists at the pro level train and race on what they are given. As for others, dunno.
