Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I rode 24 miles on the Old Plank Road Trail, through Chicago's south suburbs. Never been there before, because it is far from home and requires a long drive to get there. A couple notes:

I usually ride on the crushed limestone trails closer to home so as such my bike is covered in white dust. On the Old Plank Road Trail, everyone's bikes were spotless! Gleaming in the morning sun. That path is asphalt.

At one point I stopped to take a photo of my bike posed by a bridge abutment covered with graffiti (because a graffiti background is an oft-used photo cliche). While I was doing so, a group of cyclists rode by and one woman admonished me because she thought I was doing the tagging! "Tagging!! That's not cool man!" They were gone too quick for me to come up with a reply.

I did my Sunday ride again. About 35 miles in very warm humid weather. We are not used to humidity in Southern California . It is normally quite arid so it feels uncomfortable to me. Still had a great ride.

Just a short tempo-based training ride around my neighbourhood. Didn't want to go too far or too hard as I'm preparing for a big ride at the end of the week.

Went out on Saturday. Was crazy hot and humid and sunny. I over exerted myself and got some heat stroke and limped home the final 20km but i'm just happy i did it.

110KM all time high (previous was 103km 8 years ago. Highest this year was 70km)
my 2x 25oz bottles and 50z Osprey Hydration pack was perfect as i ran out of water on the last 2km.

Hamilton to Brantford rail trail, in Ontario Canada, about 60km total, nice trail surface for any type of bike/tire. My wife and I took turns pulling the dog on the WIKE cart. I see people bike with the dog on a leesh, ours is to much of a wuss for that.

Due to the fires everywhere, riding in Northern California is like chain smoking right now so no long weekend rides for me. Hoping the air clears up soon, but it may take a while. Peak fire season is yet to come.
