Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So my friends have planned a 68 mile ride tomorrow with about 6000 feet of climbing. I think that's too short and not enough climbing so I want to start from my house instead of the starting point which round-trip will add about 20 miles and 2000 feet of clmbing.

I talked to a few friends to see if they are willing to join me. All of them said no. WTF?

Some people just don't know a good time when they see one.

Is this a group ride? 20 miles isn’t all that with it.

Since we need an early start, I suggested they put some butter on their pillows. That way we can wake up oily in the morning.

I need a new route/ routes. Seems like for my personal comfort level I either go around the colonial parkway or I do the cap trail. Colonial parkway is pretty but concrete is purposely rough and makes for a pretty annoying ride. The cap trail you don’t have to worry about cars but it’s the same boring scenery over and over. Today when I turned around I found myself dreading the 12 miles back to where I could get off the trail. I even thought about hopping off the trail and getting on route 5 just because I found myself loathing the trail so much. Problem route 5 speed limit is 60 in areas and there is not a shoulder.

Some riders go north, i’ve driven around that area but I don’t know it well enough to venture out alone. Also don’t have a wahoo or garmin so I can’t pre program a route.

Do you have a Strava account? You could look at local heat maps for ideas. Or check bike club routes.

Back in the good old days I printed out cue sheets and attached them to the handlebars. #KidsToday

I have the free version, i’ll check to see if I can check the heat map. The bike clubs seem to go in the general areas that I go. Some small variations but not miles and miles worth.

I was in a REAL BAD MOOD earlier this afternoon. Without getting too far into the details, my niece was being stupid on Facebook, in my field of expertise, and it turns out a LOT of her friends are also morons and proud to show off their ignorance.

I had to ride to detox. I took the Circuit, and even though I only rode 23 miles, it was so good for the soul that I'd almost forgotten being buzzed by some shrimpdick in a van. THAT is a successful ride!

I dropped off another forum because it had turned toxic. I like arguing politics, but it had become more like the Monty Python sketch -

It would have done that even if you were standing still, as windy as it is here this afternoon.
