Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So on the centerville this morning I came upon an old man on a motor scooter. Wouldn’t have been a big deal but he was in the bike lane. I passed him and went on my way. Sometime later I was going up a “hill” and he passes me, again in the bike lane and just about pushed me into the grass. Never said a word, it was like I didn’t exist. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

I always figure that anything you can do remotely, somebody else could, too.

Put them in your living room. That way you can always watch them when you are home.

In the 25 years we've lived here, I don't think we parked in the garage at all.

Part of the problem is, in 1946 when the house was built, they called it a '2-car garage', but I'm not sure even then you could have parked 2 average cars in there. Just not wide enough. Just for grins, I checked the size of your average car in 1946, in this case a Mercury sedan. a little over 16 feet long, and a little over 6' wide. The inside of the garage is only 19' x 16 feet. So, with the car fully in the garage, it would be nosing up against the steps down from the kitchen. With two cars in the garage, you'd have about a foot on either side and maybe a little over that between them.

Maybe you could park two Fiat 500s in there, but you might have to crawl out the sunroof.

That would be nice of them, but I don't think that too many people are going to remotely close my door for me.

Folks in our neighborhood got a warning from the local constabulary about some people breaking into cars parked in driveways looking for garage door opener remotes, who then come back and steal what's in the garage. In fact they broke into the Dodge (though, to be fair, I probably left it unlocked), but of course since I don't use the garage for cars, I don't carry one. Our garage door opener is engaged with the door and unplugged, which serves as an effective lock, but we also have two bolts screwed to the door that go into holes in the track.

Did you do a good deed?

Speaking of which, I did one yesterday. On the other side of a busy four-lane road from where I was mowing I saw a hubcap come off a car and was sitting where traffic kept running over it. I waited for the right moment and then dashed across and got it off the road.

It was like playing real-life Frogger.

Earlier this year I saw a woman leave her empty cart behind another car in a Whole Foods parking garage. The cart corral was maybe 30’ away. I put the cart in its proper place.

There's been a shopping cart in the weeds where an MUP intersects a nearby road. I haven't stopped to look at it to see what store, but it's got to be at least a mile away.

I was relieved when we moved to our house 10 years ago, and no longer had to park our cars in the garage. Currently, our garage is home to a woodworking/shop area, workout area, music studio area, and bike area. I also have a beer fridge and a small sofa. As it should be.

I hate it when people do that, and I'm always putting up carts that people leave out. Mainly so they don't roll into my car. I'm selfish in that way.
