Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I ended up missing my window to ride on the road last night, being distracted by work. So instead I Zwifted, and did the "Mountain 8" route. I'm not sure it was the best decision, having also done Old La Honda on Sunday. We'll see if I can still turn over pedals later today. The Mountain 8 route includes the Epic KOM in reverse, which has more steep pitches than the forward KOM, plus it has more and longer little descents during the climb, which may seem like welcome respites except you end up paying for the same real estate twice.

The biggest issue I'm having is that the laptop I'm running it on takes FOREVER to load Zwift, then FOREVER to load any Worlds. I think it's time to invest in a dedicated PC, with minimal everything but a killer graphics card......

Like Pro Crit racers and sprint car racers, those guys are locked in the outhouse until it's time to race. Once you unlock and open the outhouse door, you point them to whatever they're riding or driving, and hope they can twitch their way to the proper machine. After that, you get to watch some poetry in motion.

I'm running Zwift on on a 4th-gen Apple TV feeding a 24" monitor. It works great, loads fast, and has been very stable. That said, you will get better details (shadows, mostly) with a badass graphics card on a dedicated PC..

Fixed.

And that's an interesting source you use, one that says the mockingbird really isn't "Texas-y."

Gentlemen, allow me to be the voice of reason: both Texas and Tennessee are terrible states. With terrible football teams at all levels.

Glad I could clear that up for you.

It's not, but the bird was selected by a bunch of womens' clubs, so what would you expect. Should have been some type of raptor. Something rugged and a predator. The Red Tailed Hawk would have been a good choice.

Last year isn’t indicative of much.

And yes, yes it is. I like states that don’t nearly turn into humanitarian disasters because of a winter storm.

I like Chattanooga, but had never spent any appreciable time in the rest of the state. Literally, because we came up from the south. Driving all the way across the state was miserable, with incredibly rough pavement poinding the snot out of the car the entire way.

Holy crap! Looks like a major storm is brewing. It's so dark the street lights have come on. And me without and rain gear.

If you came up from the south then you didn't drive across the state. It's right on the southern border.

When we came to Chatty for the Ironman, we popped up from GA and it was fine. A couple of weeks ago we drove back from Albany and had to traverse the width of TN. That’s when I got frustrated.

The SEC wanted Texas and Oklahoma a few years ago, but that fell through so they went with the sloppy seconds: A & M and Missouri.

Who knows what's happening now.
